A relegation six-pointer kicks off this weekend’s La Liga action as Real Valladolid travels to take on Cádiz on Friday night.
The home side comes into the match in 16th and just one point outside of the drop zone.
Meanwhile, the visitors are one spot behind them with a minus-six goal difference the only thing between the two teams.
The winner could push up to 14th, and I expect both clubs to be battling to the final minute in this crucial match.
Cadiz Pushing to Stay in Spanish Top Flight
Cádiz is pushing to stay in La Liga for the fourth consecutive season. If they are able to survive this campaign, it would be the longest run for the club since the early 1990s.
A high-flying attack will not be the reason the team avoids relegation. Coming into the game, manager Sergio’s side is in the bottom five of the Spanish top flight in multiple offensive categories, including expected goals per 90 minutes (0.98), shots per game (9.94) and big shots created per match (1.324).
However, Sergio’s team has been tough to beat at the Nuevo Mirandilla. During the year, the club has picked up 60% of their points at home.
In seven matches against teams in the bottom half of the table, Cádiz is undefeated, picking up 13 crucial points. They are going to need a few more to stay in the division.
Valladolid Barely Above Relegation Zone
On April 4, Paulo Pezzolano was hired as manager to keep Valladolid in La Liga for the fourth time in the past five seasons. His tenure started with a pair of wins and a draw, but the team has since lost four on the bounce.
Pezzolano hasn't been able to solve one of the main issues for the club this campaign, a very leaky defense.
In his seven games in charge, his side has allowed an average of 1.66 xG and 2.29 big chances per 90 minutes. Valladolid has also given up multiple goals in five of those fixtures, includes each of the past four.
This is the same team that ranks toward the bottom of the division in expected goals allowed per game (1.73) and opponents’ shots per match (15.5).
Cadiz vs Real Valladolid Pick
Both teams have to keep pushing for a victory and I don’t trust either defense to hold up for a full 90 minutes.
So, my best bet is to take the Yes on Both Teams to Score at -125 odds, which I would play to -135.
Yes, I touched on Cádiz's offensive struggles, but that hasn't been the case at home against lesser competition. Against the bottom 10 teams, Sergio’s side has scored in every match and is averaging 1.49 xG in those games.
However, the defense hasn't been perfect in those fixtures, which is why this same bet has cashed in five of those games against teams in the bottom half of the table.
As for the visitors, this would have been a winning ticket in all three away trips under their new manager.
This is a massive contest for both clubs, and I expect to see goals in this relegation six-pointer.
