The St. Louis Cardinals have started strong through six games, but I’m not convinced that they maintain that success. The Boston Red Sox come off two solid road wins against the Orioles, helping them regain some momentum, and now they return home for their Opening Day.
Rafael Devers is back to hitting well, and Fenway is sure to have a lively atmosphere on Friday afternoon. Buehler can't perform worse than he did in his season debut, and I'm sure he’s eager to make a strong impression with his new team. Buehler appeared to figure things out in the postseason last year, and that should carry over into his first home start of 2025.
San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs
- Time/Location: 2:20 p.m. ET at Wrigley Field (Chicago, IL)
- Starting Pitchers: Randy Vasquez (San Diego Padres) vs. Shota Imanaga (Chicago Cubs)
- Prediction: Cubs ML (-165)
I lean toward the Chicago Cubs here. Shota Imanaga has made a couple of solid starts so far, with good results in both. He had a no-decision against the Dodgers on March 18, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing no hits but walking four.
In his most recent outing, he earned a win over Arizona, giving up just one earned run in 7.0 innings. Randy Vasquez, on the other hand, looked good in his 2025 debut against a struggling Braves team, throwing 6.0 scoreless innings with four hits and four walks.
The Cubs have been on a roll offensively, scoring four or more runs in six of their last seven games. They combined for 35 runs in a three-game sweep of the A’s, so if that form continues, Imanaga won’t need to do much to secure a win over the San Diego Padres here.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Mets
- Time/Location: 3:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field (Flushing, Queens, NY)
- Starting Pitchers: Kevin Gausman (Toronto Blue Jays) vs. Tylor Megill (New York Mets)
- Prediction: Blue Jays ML +110
Toronto enters this matchup having won five of their first seven games and is aiming for their fifth consecutive victory. The Toronto Blue Jays are sending Kevin Gausman to the mound, who was excellent in his first start, but he is set to face a tough New York lineup.
The New York Mets have scored 6+ runs in two of their last three games, though they could improve their team batting average. New York is starting Tylor Megill, who has been inconsistent over the years but pitched well in his most recent outing. I believe Gausman is the superior pitcher in this matchup, and with Toronto's offense performing much better, I’m taking the Blue Jays for the win here.
