Virginia was one of the last states without commercial or tribal casinos. Sports betting operators don't need to be tied to a brick-and-mortar casino to operate in the state.

Virginia's bill did specify that five cities — Richmond, Norfolk, Danville, Portsmouth and Bristol — can build casinos and sportsbooks.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam wanted NASCAR tracks Martinsville and Richmond Raceway included in the sports betting landscape. He pushed these tracks to launch their sportsbooks or partner with an existing operator.

The bill also allows a sports franchise that relocates to the state to have sports betting in its stadium. When might this apply? The Washington Commanders might be headed to Virginia when their lease at FedEx Field in Andover, Maryland, expires in 2027.

States don't need their own professional team to have a strong sports market. Technically speaking, Virginia doesn't have any pro teams. In fact, Virginia is the most populous U.S state without a pro franchise playing within its borders. But the truth is that Virginia is more or less "home" to all of the Washington, D.C. pro teams, and the fan base is especially strong in northern Virginia. The Washington Commanders (NFL) and Washington Capitals (NHL) even have practice facilities and team headquarters in Northern Virginia.

• The Washington Commanders suffered a 28-27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, squandering a 24-14 lead in the second half. Jayden Daniels played efficiently but couldn't lead a final scoring drive. A controversial fourth-down spot and a costly offsides penalty in the closing minutes dashed Washington's hopes of a comeback. This loss, dropping the Commanders to 7-3, halted their impressive start to the season and highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in late-game situations and defensive coverage against deep passes.
  
  
• The Washington Capitals dominated the St. Louis Blues with an 8-1 victory. Alex Ovechkin and Connor McMichael each scored twice, with Ovechkin continuing his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal record. Logan Thompson maintained his perfect record in goal for Washington. The Capitals' offense was relentless, with six different players scoring. Washington's strong second period, where they outscored St. Louis despite being outshot, was crucial. The Blues struggled defensively, with Jordan Binnington facing heavy pressure throughout the game.
  
  
• The Washington Wizards suffered a 107-92 loss to the Houston Rockets, extending their losing streak to five games. Kyle Kuzma returned from injury to lead the team with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Houston's dominant performance. The Wizards struggled with rebounding, being outrebounded 58-34, a persistent issue this season. Jordan Poole had a difficult game with 11 points and 8 turnovers. Rookie Alexandre Sarr had limited impact. Washington fell behind early and couldn't recover from a 15-point halftime deficit.

Old Dominion first played football in 1930 as the William & Mary Norfolk Division Braves, but the program was disbanded after 1941.
