What NASCAR offseason?
As I write this post, NASCAR Cup Series teams are testing the new Next Gen car at Charlotte Motor Speedway while oddsmakers are already posting odds to win the 2022 Daytona 500, which takes place on Feb. 20.
This is a very unique scenario for both NASCAR bettors and oddsmakers because the Next Gen car basically wipes the slate clean when it comes recent performance at Daytona, yet oddsmakers have little else to go on when setting lines for the Great American Race.
With this in mind, Denny Hamlin is unsurprisingly the Daytona 500 favorite at +1000 odds, followed by Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson and Joey Logano all at +1200.
Michael McDowell, upset winner of the 2021 Daytona 500, is way down the odds board at +6000 for those interested in taking a shot on a longshot.
Who Is the Daytona 500 Favorite for 2022?
Let's dive into the key contenders:
1. Denny Hamlin (+1000)
Hamlin has won this race three times, including two of the last three years. Despite the next-gen car questions, he's the deserving favorite.
2. Ryan Blaney (+1200)
Blaney has two runner-up finishes at Daytona, including the second-closest race in Daytona 500 in 2020 when he lost to Hamlin. He DNF'd in 2021, but did win a race at Daytona International Speedway later in the season.
3. Chase Elliott (+1200)
While Ellliott does have a win at Daytona in the XFINITY Series, the 2020 Cup Series champion has yet to find victory lane here in NASCAR's premier series.
4. Kyle Larson (+1200)
Superspeedway racing has never been Larson's forte, but coming off a 10-win, championship season, perhaps the move to the Next Gen car will help bridge the gap between himself and the top pack-racing drivers.
5. Joey Logano (+1200)
Logano, who is widely-regarded as one of the top superspeedway racers in the Cup Series garage, should once again be considered among the favorites to win the 2022 Daytona 500.
6. William Byron (+1400)
While Byron has not won the Great American Race in his short Cup Series career, the Hendrick Motorsports driver did win at Daytona in August of 2020, showing he knows how to get it done at this racetrack.
7. Kurt Busch (+1600)
Busch, the 2017 Daytona 500 winner, will make the move from Chip Ganassi Racing to 23XI Racing for the 2022 season.
Don't forget that new 23XI teammate Bubba Wallace won the most recent Cup Series superspeedway race at Talladega last month.
8. Bubba Wallace (+1600)
Speaking of Wallace, Bubba checks at 16-1 to win the 2022 Daytona 500 and now has the benefit of a fellow savvy superspeedway racer in Kurt Busch to work with throughout Speedweeks in Daytona.
9. Brad Keselowski (+1600)
Keselowski has a Cup Series championship and a win at Daytona (July of 2016) under his belt, yet a win in the 500 has eluded him throughout his career.
Kez left Team Penske at the end of the 2021 to become a part owner and driver at now-Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing and is hoping to make a big splash with a Daytona 500 win with his new team.
10. Alex Bowman (+1800)
Bowman has started first or second at the Daytona 500 in each of the last four years but never turned it into much, with his best finish being 11th in 2019.
11. Kevin Harvick (+1800)
Harvick hasn't finished worse than fifth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings in the last five years, but his Daytona 500 results have been a mixed bag. He's been top 5 the last two seasons, but missed the top 20 in the three years prior to that.
12. Kyle Busch (+1800)
Busch has just four top 10 finishes in 17 years but did finish second to Hamlin in 2019.
13. Austin Dillon (+2000)
Dillon captured the 2018 Daytona 500 as a 50-1 longshot. He finished third in 2021 and hasn't been worse than 20th since his debut in 2013.

Do Longshots Win the Daytona 500?
Longshots can and do win the Daytona 500. Not every year by any means, but in the last decade, three winners have closed at 50-1 or greater.
