Rain was already in the NASCAR weather forecast ahead of Sunday's race at Michigan, but the timing of the precipitation could not have been worse.
After a dry afternoon at Michigan International Speedway, cars began making pace laps prior to the start of the FireKeepers Casino 400 only to see the rain finally show up right before the green flag waved.
As a result, NASCAR had no choice but to delay today's race in hopes of drier weather later this afternoon.
Unfortunately, there are some obstacles standing in the way should the rain not clear out quickly, so let's dig into the chances that NASCAR is able to get the FireKeepers Casino 400 underway on Sunday.
Updated NASCAR Weather Forecast for Michigan
According to the National Weather Service, there's a 67% chance of rain until 5 p.m. ET in Brooklyn Michigan, which doesn't instill much confidence that the weather will clear out anytime soon.
That percentage does drop to 24% by 8 p.m. ET, but that could simply be too late for running the race on Sunday.
The key problem for NASCAR is that Michigan International Speedway does not have lights, leaving a very tight window to get today's FireKeepers Casino 400 started once the track is dry.
For example, this circuit is two miles in length, meaning it can take between 90-120 minutes for officials to dry the track's surface.
Therefore, if the rain doesn't taper off until 5 p.m. ET, it's hard to see NASCAR starting the race with sunset looming.
Should Sunday's FireKeepers Casino 400 get postponed, Monday's weather forecast looks great with sunny conditions and no rain expected.
