  • According to the Wesgate Las Vegas Superbook, one bettor put $10K on the Lakers to win the NBA title next year.
  • But when they placed that bet is the much more interesting story.

Sometimes a bettor’s timing seems too good.

The Westgate in Las Vegas took a $10,000 bet on Saturday at 3 p.m. local time on the Los Angeles Lakers to win the 2020 NBA title at 5-1 odds.

Twenty seven minutes later, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted that the New Orleans Pelicans had traded Anthony Davis to the LA Lakers to join LeBron James.

The Pelicans have agreed to a deal to trade Anthony Davis to the Lakers for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and three first-round picks – including the No. 4 overall in 2019 Draft, league sources tell ESPN.

“I’m sure it was with knowledge, but that’s why we have liability limits in place,” said Jeff Sherman, manager at the Westgate. The liability limit for futures was set at $50,000.

It’s a sizable bet, but is a good one?

The Westgate shortened odds to 3-1. FanDuel and DraftKings in New Jersey took them to +550. PointsBet, the sportsbook known for taking more aggressive risks put out a “championship price freeze” through Sunday, offering the Lakers at 7-1 to win the title.
