Mississippi State Bulldogs Football

Mississippi State kicks off an important year for Bulldogs football as first-year head coach Jeff Lebby leads the team into the 2024 season. After head coach Mike Leach's death in 2022 and Zach Arnett's short tenure with a 5-7 record last year, Bulldogs faithful hope Lebby can revitalize the program, especially the offense. However, it remains a tough task, especially in the always-tough SEC, which welcomes powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma to the conference this year.

Last season, the Bulldogs missed a bowl game for the first time since 2009. The setback was largely due to a high-flying offense that had its wings clipped. However, Mississippi State made great use of the transfer portal to stack the offensive line for 2024, and returning Jeffery Pittman and Utah State transfer Davon Booth could get the run game going.

It'll all run though quarterback and Baylor transfer Blake Shapen, who could be the key to the team's fortunes in 2024. He will have returning receiver Jordan Mosley, as well as Kelly Akharaiyi (UTEP) and Kevin Coleman (Louisville) as options from the portal, to air out the offense.

The Bulldogs defense, though, remains a question mark for 2024. The team doesn't have much defensive production returning, so safety Corey Ellington and Isaac Smith have a lot of immediate pressure to deliver, as do a number of transfers who could be immediate starters.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Point Spreads

"Covering the spread" is a reference to a spread bet, which is a bet on how much a team will win the game by.

Here’s how a Bulldogs spread might look:

  • Mississippi State -9.5 (-110)
  • Arkansas -9.5 (-110)

If the Bulldogs win 31-21, they’re winners "against the spread" (ATS) since they need to win by at least 10 points to cash spread tickets. Arkansas, on the other hand, can cover with an outright win or a loss of no more than nine points.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Over/Unders

Betting on the Bulldogs' totals proved a slightly profitable endeavor in 2023 if you banked on offense. When betting on the total, they finished 6-4-1 (60%) to the over.

Oddsmakers set the total at how many points they think will be scored, so it could be 47 for a game against powerhouse Alabama, for example. If you took the under, a 24-21 final means your bet pays off no matter who wins the game. If you bet over, you’d need to see at least 48 points scored between the two teams. Ties on the bet are possible, and they result in refunds for over and under bets.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Moneylines

Moneyline odds take into account how likely a team is to win the game and adjust payouts accordingly. A winning record doesn’t always mean a profit, especially if the team is often favored.

Miss. St. defeating Vanderbilt as a -300 favorite is fine, but a $30 bet pays out just $10. If you’re able to catch the Bulldogs as a +300 underdog, though, a $10 bet on them profits $30. These bets are simplest to understand with $10 or $100 as a unit, but the math is the same regardless of your bet size.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Props

Player props are bets on the stats put up by a player for a single game. You could bet on players' rushing or passing stats, for example. You can even bet on special teams players.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Futures

If you're optimistic about Miss. State's upcoming season, you can put your money down on a futures bet.

Futures are wagers that settle at the end of the season. For example, you can bet on the Bulldogs to win a national title (1,000-1 odds) or the SEC (400-1). However, for more realistic options, you can also consider futures bets on Bulldogs players to win certain end-of-season awards. You can also bet on over/unders on team wins throughout the year, which is set at a low 4.0 for the 2024 Bulldogs.
