The people of Irving, Texas are one-step closer to having a casino in their city.
In a narrow vote, the Irving Zoning Commission has set the stage for a potential casino resort and arena development near the old Texas Stadium site.
The commission voted 5-4 to approve crucial zoning changes, paving the way for the owners of the Dallas Mavericks to pursue their ambitious projects.
Perhaps it was the Super Bowl that helped get the measure approved.
Zoning Changes Open Doors for High-Intensity Development
The commission's decision marks a significant shift for the 1,001-acre area surrounding State Highways 114, 183, and Loop 12. The approved proposals will transform this region into a high-intensity mixed-use development.
This decision includes changes to two specific tracts on the northeast side of State Highway 114—directly across from the former Texas Stadium—altering them from transit-oriented mixed-use communities to high-intensity mixed-use zones.
Casino and Resort Vision Gains Momentum
The vision for a multi-billion-dollar casino and resort in Irving took a step closer to becoming a reality with these changes. The plan is to put it near the old Texas Stadium site. The stadium was imploded in 2010, so it's no longer there.

However, the plan was met with mixed reactions from the local community during a public meeting. While some residents oppose the idea, others see the potential benefits such a development could bring to the area.
Supporters Highlight Economic Opportunities
Supporters of the development argue that it presents a considerable opportunity for economic growth in the region. "We have been presented with a unique opportunity, and I believe we should welcome this proposal, as it would put us back on the map," stated Commissioner Gerald Sanguino.
The development could potentially create thousands of jobs and attract visitors from across the country, boosting local businesses and transforming the area's economic landscape.
The journey towards realizing this ambitious project is just beginning, and stakeholders on all sides will be watching closely as it unfolds.
Are There Casinos in Texas?
When it comes to land-based casinos in Texas, there are two Indian casinos and one casino boat.
Both Indian casinos offer Class II gaming machines, which are based on bingo. Although these video gaming devices look like slot machines, they are actually bingo games, and the spinning reels are for "entertainment purposes only."
Across the country, sports betting is rapidly growing in popularity, with 39 states having already legalized it. This year, several Texas lawmakers introduced bills to pave the way for legal sports betting in the Lone Star State. And the support for the idea continues to increase.
Legal Hurdles Remain
Despite the zoning commission's decision, the proposed resort and casino still face significant legal hurdles. A change in Texas law is required for the project to proceed, adding an extra layer of complexity and uncertainty. That appears to be unlikely, at least this year.
Gambling remains illegal in Texas, so lawmakers would need to amend state law before a constitutional amendment can be presented to voters. According to CBS News, the Sands Corporation stated that even if these changes occur, the project could still be five to seven years away from completion.
