"Major League Soccer has placed Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez on administrative leave following a report that the player violated the league’s gambling policies, as well as the terms of his January 2022 reinstatement," the league said in a statement Friday.

Hernandez was suspended in 2021 after the MLS found that he gambled on two league games, and he expressed concerns about his safety due to his gambling debts. At the time of the suspension, MLS said there was no evidence that Hernandez bet on matches involving his own team or that he had any confidential information regarding the two MLS games he wagered on. They added that Hernandez made extensive wagers on other sports.

Hernandez, who said he sought help for his gambling addiction after his suspension, was reinstated by the MLS in 2022 under the condition that he would continue to abstain from gambling.
