The Carolina Hurricanes take on the New York Rangers at PNC Arena on Tuesday in what should be an exciting battle between division rivals. As of Monday, the Hurricanes sit two points behind the Rangers for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division, so this contest has major implications regarding playoff seeding.
Rather than picking a side in a matchup that is sure to be closely contested, my best bet is on Under 6 at -120 odds at BetMGM Sportsbook. While both these teams boast plenty of offensive firepower, they have been two of the NHL’s best defensive squads of late.
Since Jan. 1, Carolina’s 2.10 xGA/60 at 5-on-5 ranks No. 1 in the NHL. Over this stretch, the Hurricanes have allowed 2.13 goals per game, which is second-best in the league. Across their last 12 games, Carolina has given up more than two goals in regulation just twice.
Much of this success comes from the Hurricanes’ excellent defensive-zone play, but they have also gotten much better goaltending of late. Frederik Andersen has surrendered three total goals across his two starts since returning from a blood-clotting issue, and Pyotr Kochetkov has found his game, posting a 1.71 GAA and a .940 SV% in February.
The Rangers’ underlying defensive numbers are still unimpressive, but thanks to a post-All-Star break resurgence from goaltender Igor Shesterkin, New York is giving up 2.05 goals per game since the start of February, which ranks No. 3 in the NHL. Over his last 10 starts, Shesterkin owns a 1.80 GAA and a .948 SV%.
Last time these teams met we saw seven total goals in a 6-1 Hurricanes victory, but the under had hit in their previous three meetings. This time out, expect an entertaining but low-scoring battle in what should serve as a playoff dress rehearsal of sorts.
