North Carolina is set to launch legal online sports wagering on March 11.
Many residents in the Tar Heel State will be ecstatic to start betting on sports. But some of them are probably asking, "Will I be able to bet on Minor League Baseball?"
The short answer is yes, but it is more complicated than that.
There are 10 MiLB teams in North Carolina: the Asheville Tourists, Carolina Mudcats, Charlotte Knights, Down East Wood Ducks, Durham Bulls, Fayetteville Woodpeckers, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Hickory Crawdads, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and the Winston-Salem Dash. Of those teams, there are two in Triple-A, none in Double-A, four in High-A and four in Single-A.
The Sports Betting Division of the NC State Lottery has approved wagering for Triple-A level minor league baseball only. That means bettors in North Carolina will be allowed to bet on games involving the Charlotte Knights and the Durham Bulls.
North Carolina has approved eight sportsbooks for mobile wagering in the state. It is unclear which sportsbooks will offer Minor League Baseball games. You will have to check the sportsbooks when games begin later in March. All of the sportsbooks could feasibly offer Triple-A games, but some may not have the infrastructure to do so.
Sportsbooks are already offering pre-launch signup promotions in North Carolina. Visit our North Carolina legalization page for more information on how to bet on sports in the state.
