Scottie Scheffler entered the U.S. Open as the overwhelming favorite to win outright at +300. Now the World No. 1 golfer is in danger of missing the cut at Pinehurst. Scheffler shot a four-over par second-round 74 Friday after entering the day one-over par.

At the time that Scheffler's round ended, there was a 52% chance the cutline would be +4 and a 41% chance the cutline would be +5, according to Data Golf's live model. Typically, for the PGA Tour, the cut line is the top 65 and ties, but under USGA rules, the cutline is top 60 and ties for the U.S. Open.

Scheffler went the entire day without a birdie, something he hasn't done in a major championship round as a professional. The last time he went without a birdie in a major round was as an amateur in 2016 at the U.S. Open. Scheffler's frustration was visible as he struggled to find a rhythm.

Scheffler has not missed a cut since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. His streak of 38 consecutive made cuts is second on the PGA Tour behind his playing partner Friday Xander Schauffele’s 48.

What Were the Odds For Scheffler to Miss the Cut?

Scheffler was around +800 at BetMGM to miss the cut, and at Bet365, he was around +1200 to miss the cut. Bet365 also had Scheffler listed at +700 to win by four or more strokes.

Entering the first round of the U.S. Open, Scheffler had 19.1% of betting tickets and 27.9% of the handle to be the first-round leader at BetMGM. Scheffler had 19.4% of tickets and 29.3% off the handle to win the tournament outright at BetMGM.

In the past 40 years, there have been 60 instances of a golfer being listed under +500 win a major. If Scheffler misses the cut, this would be just the fourth time a player with odds under +500 missed the cut: Tiger Woods (U.S. Open, 2006; Open Championship, 2009), Seve Ballesteros (PGA Championship, 1988).
