When talking about revenue, Virginia casinos continue to put up big numbers.

The latest report from The Virginia Lottery shows that the state’s three casinos combined for almost $57 million in adjusted gaming revenue in September, resulting in a 9% increase from the nearly $52 million collected in the same month last year.

A lot of the credit goes to higher earnings from slots and table games. Slots brought in $43 million, an increase of more than 10% from the previous year. Table games earned $13.5 million, improving nearly 5%.

In September, Virginia casinos earned almost $56.6 million from gaming. The state law applies a graduated tax on a casino's adjusted gross revenue (wagers minus winnings), so they paid nearly $11.4 million in taxes to the Gaming Proceeds Fund.

The money from casino taxes will be used for projects chosen by the General Assembly.

Under Virginia law, 6% of a casino operator’s adjusted gross revenue is also paid to the host city.

New Casino Should Add to Strong Revenue Figures

The report also indicates that the Bristol Casino generated more than $14 million in adjusted gross revenues from slots and table games in September. This comes after Bristol Casino had its second-best revenue month ever in August and set a new record for income from slot machines.

It’s significant because it was recently announced that the permanent location of the Bristol Casino will open in November.

The Bristol Casino serves as a temporary establishment, essentially acting as a placeholder for the forthcoming Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol. The permanent location will nearly double the amount of slot machines and table games currently available. The temporary location has 900 slot machines and 29 tables. The new Hard Rock Casino will offer 1,500 slots and over 50 table games.

Norfolk Casino Also On The Way

On top of that, it was recently announced that a casino project is underway in Norfolk, which is projected to be completed by September 2027.

By November 2025, a temporary casino will operate in a 7,200-square-foot 'sprung structure'—essentially an upscale tent. It will give gamblers a place to go until the permanent one is finished. When it is ready to use, the new permanent Norfolk casino is expected to add around 50 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines to the mix of gaming options around Old Dominion.

So, it looks like the state’s casino revenue numbers should hold strong in the coming months. At least the opportunity will be there.
