This goes well beyond the level of pocket change.
Rick Harrison recently filmed an episode of “Pawn Stars” in Las Vegas at Circa Resort & Casino’s rooftop cocktail lounge, the Legacy Club, which is known for showcasing 500 gold bars worth over $2 million.
Harrison was there for a very important meeting that revolved around what he called the “most expensive item he’s ever had the opportunity to make a deal on" – a coin worth $30 million. You could say it was a roll of the dice.
This coin, a 1933 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle, is one of the most expensive in the world.
The 1933 Double Eagle was the last gold coin struck for circulation by the U.S. Mint. Before its release, a presidential order on March 6, 1933, prohibited banks from paying out gold coins or certificates. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt removed the United States from the gold standard to aid the struggling economy during the Great Depression.
Consequently, all 1933 Double Eagles were ordered to be destroyed. However, 10 managed to escape into private hands.
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, these coins were sold privately, often through advertisements, for $1,000 to $2,200. But in 2021, a 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coin sold for $18.9 million at auction, the highest price ever paid for a single coin in a public sale. Today, the coin could fetch as much as $30 million.
Harrison Makes $25 Million Offer
In the "Pawn Stars" episode filmed at Circa, which premiered last week, a man attempted to sell Harrison the 1933 MS 65 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, a coin that had sold for over $18 million a few years ago.
Harrison offered $25 million, but the man declined, stating he would only consider offers exceeding $30 million. Nevertheless, Harrison took some extra content for his Instagram, featuring both the coin and Circa's 10-foot display.
Circa’s Legacy Club has 500 custom gold bars containing 1,000 ounces of gold. Sunshine Mine made these bars, each engraved with the Circa logo and a number from 1 to 500. Guests can take pictures with the display while watching a ticker that shows the real-time value of the bars.
The lounge overlooks Sin City from Circa’s 60th floor. You can also catch a glimpse of photos and busts of iconic Las Vegas personalities.
It just goes to show how much more you can find at a casino these days, from celebrity sightings to photo-ops and everything in between.
