The Texans went from worst to first last season, making an impressive run to win the AFC South and a playoff game with C.J. Stroud leading the way.

Now, Houston is the favorite at almost even money to win the division and is among the biggest favorites to win the Super Bowl. This is unfamiliar territory for the Texans franchise.

Here's everything you need to know.

Important Texans Betting Stats

Surprisingly, Stroud has started the third-fewest games at quarterback on the Texans roster. He was 9-8 against the spread last season.

Davis Mills is 14-12 ATS as an NFL starting QB, while Case Keenum is 32-33-3.

Including the playoffs, DeMeco Ryans was 10-9 against the number last season.

Stroud Establishes Texans as Contenders

Few teams will be more popular picks this season than the Houston Texans.

Offensively, there isn’t much to dislike about Houston. C.J. Stroud has already proven to be a more-than-capable NFL quarterback, winning a playoff game in his first season. The offense also improved by adding wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and Houston will get second-year receiver Tank Dell back after an injury ended what was an encouraging rookie season.

Up front, the Texans are well-positioned to protect Stroud. Devin Singletary thrived in the run game but signed with the Giants in free agency. Joe Mixon was acquired from the Bengals to be the bellcow running back, although he struggled with an injury early in camp while Dameon Pierce has impressed.

Stroud will lead what could be one of the best offenses in the NFL this season. His accuracy and arm strength were on full display as a rookie, and it seems like there’s nowhere to go but up. Stroud has already become a popular MVP pick as he enters his second season.

The concerns for Houston are on the defensive side of the ball.

Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. performed well in his second NFL season, but Steven Nelson, who ranked 29th out of 127 qualifying corners last season according to Pro Football Focus, retired. Rookie Kamari Lassiter is who Houston is hoping can fill that void, but it’s a big ask of a rookie to step up in the secondary straightaway.

The secondary will be especially key for Houston this season when competing in the division. Tennessee has the dynamic duo of DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley, while the Colts have the reliable Michael Pittman Jr. leading an otherwise young receiving corps that has potential. The remaining team in the AFC South is led by Trevor Lawrence, who appears due for a bounce-back season.

If Houston is going to continue developing with Stroud as the star, the defense will have to prove it is not a crutch and can hold up its end of the bargain.

How To Back the Texans This Season

It’s pretty hard to find a futures number for the Texans that hasn’t already been bet down. Houston is +105 to win the AFC South (+900 before last season) and it’s the fifth favorite to win the AFC at +800. At FanDuel, Stroud is tied with Joe Burrow as the third favorite to win the MVP at +1000 behind Patrick Mahomes (+500) and Josh Allen (+800).

Keep an eye on how Houston starts the season and how the defense shapes up. If you’re looking to bet the Texans, they might be a team that you’ll have to wait to get a good number on.

2024 Texans Schedule Info

According to Action Network’s Sean Koerner, the Texans will face the fourth-hardest schedule in the NFL this season.

Houston faces quite the gauntlet late in the season. The Texans will face the Jets (Week 9), Lions (Week 10), Cowboys (Week 11), Dolphins (Week 15), Chiefs (Week 16) and Ravens (Week 17). That doesn’t include the Bills in Week 5 either.

Houston's Week 1 Odds & Matchup

The Texans open the 2024 regular season with a road matchup against the Colts. Indianapolis will have high hopes this year with Anthony Richardson back under center after a shoulder injury ended his rookie season early.

Houston is favored by 1.5 points and the game has a total of 48.5 points, which is the third highest of the week.
