There's no match for the thrill of the start of an NFL season. Every team is in contention (technically speaking) with anticipation across the league at its peak. But as far as championship aspirations go, the entire league is looking up at the reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs open the season as +500 favorites to win Super Bowl 59, and last season's runner up, the San Francisco 49ers, are listed at +600. No other team has odds lower than +1000. Oddsmakers are signaling a rematch for the Super Bowl in the Superdome in New Orleans, but there are several legitimate contenders for the Vince Lombardi trophy.
Here's a look at the updated Super Bowl odds as we head into the NFL season opener.

Super Bowl 59 Odds & Analysis
The Chiefs and their pursuit of the first three-peat in Super Bowl history is the clear storyline entering Week 1. As Action Network Director of Research Evan Abrams notes in his NFL Kickoff Primer, five teams have won entered the season with the same coach and quarterback after winning back-to-back Super Bowls: the 2005-06 Patriots, 1990-91 49ers, 1980-81 Steelers, 1976-77 Steelers, and 1974-75 Dolphins. Those five teams went a combined 54-22 straight up in the regular season, but none of those teams made it back to the Super Bowl.
Despite the history, the Chiefs are still a wildly popular bet to win the Super Bowl. According to data from BetMGM, the Chiefs have received the second-most betting tickets (13%) and have the most handle (17.7%) at the sportsbook. The other team getting a ton of interest is listed at +1200 — the Lions. Detroit has the most betting tickets (13.3%) and the second-most handle (15.9%) in the NFL.
Ten of the past 11 Super Bowl champions have been listed at +1200 or shorter to win it all entering the season. Only the Chiefs, 49ers, Ravens and Lions meet that criteria with the Niners (6.8%) and Ravens (7.2%) entering the season as the two other popular choices among bettors.
The Texans made a huge leap on the field last year and their Super Bowl odds soared ahead of this season. The Texans entered last season with 200-1 odds to win the Super Bowl with rookie CJ Stroud at quarterback and a first-year head coach. After opening at 25-1, they have 16-1 odds to win it all.
If it holds, that would be the third-biggest move year-to-year for a team with odds at 20-1 or shorter. Seven teams have moved from 150-1 or longer to 20-1 or shorter in a year-to-year span. Three of those teams made the playoffs, two won a playoff game, but none have made the Super Bowl.
Biggest Super Bowl Odds Moves Year-to-Year to 20-1 or Shorter Since 1977
- 1979 to 1980 WAS 300-1 to 8-1 (+29,200)
- 1990 to 1991 DAL 250-1 to 20-1 (+23,000)
- 2023 to 2024 HOU 200-1 to 16-1 (+18,400)
- 1999 to 2000 STL 150-1 to 3-1 (+14,700)
- 1983 to 1984 NO 150-1 to 8-1 (+14,200)
- 2022 to 2023 NYJ 150-1 to 18-1 (+13,200)
- 2021 to 2022 CIN 150-1 to 20-1 (+13,000)
- 1987 to 1988 IND 150-1 to 20-1 (+13,000)
There's one more long shot capturing the attention of bettors. The Jets are 20-1 to win the Super Bowl, which gives them the seventh-best odds to win it all. But the Jets have more handle (5.7%) at BetMGM than the Eagles, Packers, Bengals and Bills.
