A rematch of Super Bowl LIV is in the cards after the 49ers and Chiefs made their respective conference championships.

While that goes against the "script" — apologies for that obligatory mention — which is the most likely matchup for the big game (49ers vs. Ravens), the Chiefs could easily pull off an upset in Baltimore this Sunday.

This is, however, the No. 8 regular season team of all-time, according to the advanced metrics. The 49ers ranked that highly among all teams since 1981, behind just the undefeated 2007 Patriots, the 1991 Washington team, 2010 Patriots and 1985 Bears, this season's Ravens, the 1987 49ers and 1996 Packers.

Even for the Chiefs and their pedigree, it would be the ultimate test, especially with this year's core of wide receivers and with a declining Travis Kelce. On their way to the Super Bowl, they would have beaten the No. 5 team since 1981, too, in the Ravens.

While all the eyeballs are on Mahomes and Kelce, it's the Chiefs' defense that's really been their MVP. Pressure by Chris Jones — who held out all preseason and the first week of the season — was what forced an incompletion from Josh Allen on a crucial down deep in Chiefs territory during the Divisional Round, leading to a miss on a game-tying field goal attempt. Kansas City was able to bottle up the Bills when it mattered most, and that credit goes to Steve Spagnuolo and his staff — rather than the offense.

For the Niners, wide receiver Deebo Samuel being out is a concern, but the real X-Factor there is offensive tackle Trent Williams, who has yet to allow a sack with Brock Purdy as quarterback. The on/off splits for Samuel are what get the headlines — but it's Williams that's key to their success.
