On paper, Cam Akers has an easy matchup tonight against a terrible Packers run defense ranked 32nd in DVOA – yet I’m still compelled to fade him.
Out of 50 qualified running backs, Akers has the lowest yards per attempt at 3.3 – a lot of that has to do with the fact he only has one rush attempt that’s gone for 15-plus yards this season. He’s coming off games against soft run defenses – Seattle and Las Vegas – in which he only averaged 3.5 yards per attempt. Basically the plus matchup can only help so much.
Last week in Baker Mayfield’s debut, Los Angeles went with a run-heavy approach, but I expect them to be a bit more pass happy now that he’s had a full week of practice under his belt.
The potential game script also does Akers no favors. As 7.5-point road underdogs, it sets up a potential floor game for him. Green Bay also plays at the slowest pace and has allowed the sixth-fewest plays per game.
I project Akers for 51.5 rushing yards tonight, but there are a lot of paths for him to even go under that number. Don’t forget he had ball security issues last week, losing a fumble and subsequently having reduced playing time in the second half.
The thing with volatile backfields, like the Rams', is they can change at any given moment. We have seen Akers perform much closer to his ceiling recently, meaning there’s only one way for him to go — and that’s down.
