Tyreek Hill seemed like a shoo-in to record the most receiving yards this season as he’s authored one of the greatest wide receiver campaigns in NFL history. The only question appeared to be whether he’d pass Calvin Johnson to set a new single-season record.
While he’s still the heavy favorite to lead the league when all is said and done, it appears his coronation might have been premature.
CeeDee Lamb passed Hill for the most receiving yards on Saturday night with a monster performance against Detroit. Lamb feasted on the Lions, catching 13 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown in the Cowboys’ controversial 20-19 victory. He now has 1,651 yards while Hill has 1,641. Lamb entered the night at +1200 to lead the league in receiving yards, but it was off the board in the immediate aftermath of his lights-out performance.
Hill left the door open for someone to possibly pass him after he missed the Dolphins' Week 15 game against the Jets with an ankle injury. However, he has a clear advantage in the race with two games to play compared to one for Lamb. The Dolphins star faces the Ravens and Bills while Lamb goes against the Commanders. Hill has also been the more prolific player on a per-game basis, averaging 117.2 yards per game compared to Lamb’s 103.2. Moreover, if the Eagles beat the Cardinals on Sunday, the Cowboys will be locked into the No. 5 seed and could possibly choose to rest their starters for their season finale.
At the same time, Hill might very well break Johnson’s all-time record of 1,964 yards. He’s +700 at DraftKings to set the new record as Miami prepares to kick off in a pivotal Week 17 clash against the Ravens. Hill needs to average 162 yards per game over the final two weeks of the season to reach 1,965 yards. It’s a tall order, but he’s reached that mark three times this year, so it’s certainly possible.
