Panthers vs. Buccaneers Picks
Since Bryce Young returned to the lineup, the Panthers are 6-1 against the spread. Some of their four outright losses in those seven games were by three to the Buccaneers, three to the Chiefs and six to the Eagles in a game they probably should have won.
Young is moving outside of the pocket with much more comfort and is showing he knows when to scramble. He’s also extending more plays that don’t end in turnovers like they did early in his career.
Young has some speed and can get away from people by using his size to his advantage, kind of like Kyler Murray. His scrambling ability will come in handy against the 25th-ranked Buccaneers pass defense, a unit that will be blitzing Young.
The good news for the Panthers is that the difference between Young’s passer rating with a clean pocket vs. facing pressure is just 77 vs. 75.
Defensively, Carolina is likely to be shredded by the Buccaneers' run game.
I’d expect Bucky Irving to have a big game if he’s given his full workload. The defense is improving, though, and playing better than it was when these teams met earlier this season.
I was surprised that the Buccaneers played as poorly as they did against the Cowboys last week. In comparing opponents, Carolina was favored at home against Dallas two weeks ago. Now, the Panthers are laying eight points to a team that lost to the Cowboys. While Carolina also lost to Dallas, it provides some context as to why I think this line is too high.
This is a lot of points for a divisional matchup that’s happening for the second time this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Panthers hang around and keep this one close.
