Against the Spread Pick
Injuries have torpedoed the 49ers this season while the Bears are trending in a better direction following some coaching changes.
I like the Bears to cover in this spot. I bet this at Bears +4 last week, but I'd still play this at +3.
My Pick: Bears +3
Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers Preview & Spread Prediction
Caleb Williams has looked a lot better since Thomas Brown took over playcalling duties from Shane Waldron. There’s serious talent on the Bears offense — the real issue has been the coaching staff. With Matt Eberflus gone, I like this spot.
Williams is completing 67% of his passes and averaging 7.1 yards per attempt in the three games under Brown compared to 59.5% and 6.1 YPA with Waldron. One of those latest three games saw Williams throw for 342 yards and avoid any interceptions against the Vikings, who rank second in DVOA against the pass.
The Bears will be boosted this week by the fact that linebacker Fred Warner doesn’t look like he’ll be 100% for San Francisco. He’s one of the two most important players on the 49ers defense — the other one, Nick Bosa, missed practice to start this week. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir also was limited to start the week.
Then you flip it over to the 49ers offense, which just lost Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason, and is already without Brandon Aiyuk.
Trent Williams is also out as he nurses injury and a personal tragedy. The 49ers offense falls off a cliff when he isn’t in there.
The Bears defense is 10th in Pass DVOA, first on third down and third in the red zone. Chicago’s pass defense also gave up a Hail Mary, which makes those numbers look worse.
The Bears run defense is a weakness, but that's mitigated by the absences of McCaffrey and Mason, not to mention Williams is unlikely to be 100% if he plays. San Francisco isn’t in a great position to attack Chicago how it would like to.
To top it all off, Brock Purdy missed a game and then threw for 97 yards last week, although it was in the snow.
In his last two games combined, he has thrown for 253 yards on 46 attempts, which is 5.5 yards per attempt for someone who entered the season among the all-time leaders in that stat.
Everyone assumes his struggles last week were due to the weather, but it extends beyond that.
My Pick: Bears +3
