Colts vs Vikings Spread Pick
By Billy Ward
It’s been a rough two weeks for the Vikings. They suffered their first loss of the season in a nail-biter in Week 7 as the Lions hit a walk-off field goal to win 31-29. Then, Minnesota turned around on short rest and lost to a Rams team that got healthy at the right time – and got away with some questionable officiating.
Much has been made of the “Lions hangover” this season, with teams struggling in the game after they face Dan Campbell's physical Detroit team. That effect was compounded by the Vikings playing on Thursday Night Football the following week and having to travel two time zones across the country.
The corollary to that might be to buy back in on those team the following week – particularly when they get a longer rest between games.
On top of that, Minnesota also is getting star tight end T.J. Hockenson this week while it's fairly healthy overall. Just one starter has an injury designation of any kind, and it’s an inside linebacker.
The Colts are down their starting left tackle and their starting right tackle a "DNP" on Friday. Now, they face the league’s No. 1 defense by DVOA against both the pass and the run.
Look for Minnesota to make a statement here, as they get back on track at home.
Pick: Vikings -5 (-110)
Colts vs Vikings Over/Under Prediction
The Vikings defense had a very strong start to the season but has tailed off in recent weeks, allowing Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford to carve them up for 30.5 points per game.
Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores will continue to live and die by the blitz, and I'm confident the Colts offense can handle the pressure with Joe Flacco at quarterback. The Colts have the sixth-best adjusted sack rate allowed on offense.
Indy should also be quite successful in limiting the number of long down-and-distance situations since its ground attack has started to take shape with Jonathan Taylor now healthy. Indianapolis is third in run block win rate, which allowed Taylor to average 5.2 yards per carry against a strong Texans defense last week.
The Vikings offense has been solid all season, but this is one of the better matchups for them thus far in 2024. The Colts play predominately zone defense, specifically Cover 2 and Cover 3. Sam Darnold has shredded zone coverage this season by completing more than 75% of his pass attempts and averaging more than 10 yards per attempt.
In the three games Flacco has played the majority of the snaps for the Colts, those games have averaged 53 total points scored per game. In perfect conditions, indoors, on Sunday night, I am expecting these teams to move up the down the field with little resistance.
I'd bet this over up to 47.
Pick: Over 46.5 (-110)
Sunday Night Football Player Props
Josh Downs has been the go-to guy in this receiving game, and he gets a massive upgrade with Flacco under center. Downs leads the Colts in red-zone targets this season (eight) and when Flacco has played the majority of the game, he has a touchdown in two of three games.
Downs has a tough matchup vs. the Vikings, but they've forced opponents to pass at the highest rate in the league (67.13%).
This is one of my favorite bets of the weekend, as the odds should be below +200.
Pick: Josh Downs Anytime TD Scorer (+270)
