This article contains predictions for an old game.

The Detroit Lions (6-1) and Green Bay Packers (6-2) will meet in the Sunday late afternoon slate of NFL Week 9. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET from Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The game will be broadcast live on FOX and can be streamed on YouTube TV and other streaming services. The Lions are 2.5-point favorites over the Packers (Lions -2.5), with the game total set at over/under 47.5 points. The Lions are -140 on the moneyline to win outright, while Green Bay is +120 to pull off the upset.

The Lions won 52-14 last week over the Titans. Jared Goff didn't have to do very much work in the win, as he threw for only 85 yards, but still managed to record three touchdown passes. Detroit has now won five straight games. The Packers won 30-27 last week over the Jaguars. However, Jordan Love exited with an injury, but he is good to go for today's matchup.

Let's get into my Lions vs. Packers predictions and my NFL picks for Week 9.

Lions vs. Packers Expert Picks

Spread

I like the Packers at +2.5 or better. There was originally uncertainty surrounding this spread because of Jordan Love's status, but he is expected to play this Sunday.

Moneyline

The Lions are playing outdoors for the first time season, which has historically been a negative for Jared Goff. But given the QB uncertainty for the Packers, I'm only comfortable backing Green Bay against the spread.

Over/Under

I have no pick for the game total.

My pick: Packers +2.5

Lions vs. Packers NFL Week 9

I'm going to old reliable with the Packers, who are +3 underdogs against the Lions.

Jared Goff, aka Pumpkin Goff, is playing outdoors for the first time all season — he's one of my favorite fades in this spot, especially against a more-than-competent Packers team.

Just to get this out of the way: I acknowledge the Lions are a covering machine. They are 70% against the spread (ATS) since Dan Campbell took over as head coach in 2021.

Goff in his career is 60% ATS (73-49-2); he's even more ridiculous indoors at 71% ATS (39-16). When playing outdoors, however, Goff is just .500 ATS (34-34-1). He's a lot more human, and there could be elements — notably some precipitation and wind — at play on Sunday that could downgrade the Lions offense overall.

While those Lions stats above are stunning, the Packers have been just as impressive under head coach Matt LaFleur, who covers at a 63.6% rate ATS (28-16) at home. The Packers are 6-1 against the number as an underdog as well.

I think this is the top of the market on the Lions. Their defense is extremely vulnerable without Aidan Hutchinson, not to mention a couple other injuries in the front seven.

We just saw the Titans, who haven't been able to move the ball on anyone this year, go up and down the field on Detroit last week in a completely misleading game if you just look at the final score. The Lions had something like 300 return yards and three short-field touchdowns.

It's also worth pointing out their competition hasn't been that strong of late. They got to face the Titans, a decimated Cowboys team missing a bunch of key defensive players and a beat-up Seahawks squad. The Lions are undoubtedly very good and a legitimate Super Bowl contender — it's just important to have context with some of their wins. There's a win over the Vikings mixed in there. For whatever reason, the Lions just have their number.

The biggest question leading up to this game: Is Jordan Love going to play? Green Bay, historically, is pretty conservative with injuries to stars players, especially before a bye week — but this is a huge divisional game. With a healthy Love, I would have the Packers favored. If he doesn't play, the question is how much of a downgrade is it?

When I bet on the Packers against the Colts (with Malik Willis starting for Love), I said the market thinks this is like a 7-, 8-, 9-point downgrade. I don't necessarily agree with that. I think it was closer to five or six points.

As for Willis, he has been pretty good — he's actually No. 1 in adjusted EPA per play with the qualifier of 61 plays or more. It's only 61 snaps, but we've seen it three times now.

The Colts defense wasn't very good and the Packers had a great game plan. The Titans defense, however, is good. And even against the Jaguars last week, Jacksonville was leading before Willis came in and put together scoring drives. He's been nothing but good every time we've seen him this season.

Mobile quarterbacks can give the Lions issues with the way that they rush the passer, and I'm still not entirely sold on their defense without Hutchinson.

I'm taking the Packers at anything over a field goal, mainly because of outdoor Goff and the possibility that Love plays. If Love gets ruled out, you could see this line creep up to +4, maybe +4.5. Nonetheless, I'm comfortable taking a field goal or more because Willis has been solid.

Pick: Packers +2.5 (-110)
