Several notable names went down through the first week of the NFL preseason, and that continued through the second week. Here’s the latest look at players who were injured in practice or over this weekend’s preseason games.
Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy
McCarthy sustained the biggest injury to date, as he’ll miss the entire 2024 campaign with a torn meniscus. He will be the first quarterback selected in the first round to miss his entire rookie season with an injury in the common draft era.
Steelers RB Jaylen Warren
Warren left Saturday’s game against Buffalo with a hamstring injury, and the extent of the injury still isn’t known. He was originally expected to form a one-two punch with Najee Harris for the second-straight year. Warren carried the ball 149 times for 784 yards and four touchdowns last season along with 61 catches for 370 yards. Any potential long-term injury would open up additional carries for Cordarrelle Patterson and La’Mical Perine.
Lions Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs
One of the most explosive running backs in the league injured his hamstring in practice last week. Fortunately, head coach Dan Campbell thinks it’s minor and the team dodged a bullet.
Lions WR Tre’Quan Smith
Smith signed with the Lions hoping to bring the big play ability he flashed while with the Saints. Unfortunately, Campbell said he’ll miss a significant period of time after injuring his hand in Detroit’s preseason win over the Chiefs.
Jaguars QB C.J. Beathard
Trevor Lawrence’s backup suffered a groin injury after being sacked late in the third quarter against the Buccaneers and was immediately ruled out. The injury potentially opens the door for Mac Jones to emerge as QB2.
Eagles OL Mekhi Becton
Becton’s star-crossed career took another potential blow as the oft-injured lineman hurt his right leg at practice over the weekend. The former Jets’ first-round pick was projected to start at guard for the Eagles.
Bills WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling
MVS suffered a scary neck injury in Buffalo’s preseason game against the Steelers. He was carted off and immediately ruled out.
Bills QB Mitchell Trubisky
Trubisky started in place of Josh Allen and played five series before going down with a knee injury. He was replaced by Ben DiNucci, who was signed a mere five days earlier.
Bengals RB Chris Evans
Evans was no lock to make the roster in a crowded Bengals backfield despite also being one of the team’s kick returners. That’s for naught now, though, as he’ll miss the entire season after being carted off with a torn patellar tendon in a joint practice against the Bears.
