The San Francisco 49ers are attempting to overcome another injury scare in Week 8.
During the first quarter of the 49ers’ Sunday night matchup against the Cowboys, running back Jordan Mason went down with an apparent injury. It was initially unclear why Mason needed to be tended to by team medical staff, and he ran off the field under his own power.
However, following the two-minute warning in the second quarter, NBC's broadcast shared that Mason sustained a shoulder injury and departed early for the locker room. The 49ers ruled Mason questionable to return.
When the injury occurred in the first quarter, Mason did not enter the medical tent and appeared to tell running backs coach Bobby Turner, “I’m good,” while holding his helmet. Mason missed a handful of plays while rookie Isaac Guerendo handled backfield duties in his absence.
Mason then returned to the game the following series in the early second quarter. Mason’s over/under rushing yardage total was set at 85.5 and was the most-bet prop for the Sunday Night Football game at BetMGM Sportsbook, according to BetMGM's John Ewing. Mason’s longest rush prop of 17.5 was also the game’s third-most bet prop. Mason had six carries for 18 total yards prior to exiting the game ahead of halftime.
Entering the weekend, Mason ranked second in the NFL in rushing yards with 667. He’s been a productive replacement for All-Pro tailback Christian McCaffrey, who’s missed all season with Achilles issues.
In addition to McCaffrey, the Niners are now without receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 7 loss to the Chiefs. Receiver Deebo Samuel has also been dealing with pneumonia in recent weeks.
