No. 1 | +10000 |
No. 2 | +5000 |
No. 3 | +125 |
The Mac Jones rollercoaster has taken yet another sharp turn.
In a surprising last-minute turn of events, Jones is no longer the favorite to be picked No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Alabama product, who had been leading the pack for over a week and was the favorite on Thursday at midday, now sits behind North Dakota State product Trey Lance at +125 odds (44.44% implied probability) to be selected third by the 49ers.
Lance has subsequently moved to minus odds at -200 (66.7%) while Ohio State's Justin Fields has dropped even further to +800 (11.11%).
Jones spent just one full season as Alabama's starter before declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft. The Heisman Trophy finalist completed 74.3% of his passes for 6,126 yards, 56 touchdowns to just seven interceptions over 17 starts. He has been lauded for his mental processing abilities, but has elicited criticism for his pedestrian athleticism and the fact he was surrounded by multiple first round-caliber weapons and arguably the best offensive line in college football.
The Jones/Fields/Lance saga got interesting after each of their respective Pro Days in March. Fields' stock increased after a strong throwing session while Jones' and Lance's fell after their lackluster performances.
Fields and Jones were co-favorites to go No. 3 overall as recently as two weeks ago, but Fields' odds have plummeted since his epilepsy diagnosis was revealed and reports that the 49ers' decision would come down to Jones or Lance.
Jones was at -305 (75.31%) to be the No. 3 pick as recently as Wednesday evening. Reports on Thursday, however, have indicated that the previous rumors were false and swung the market in Lance's direction.
