Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers said on Friday that he has canceled the $10,000 bet he made with Jayden Daniels on who would win Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The two former LSU teammates had confirmed this week that they made the friendly wager on whether one or the other would win the award. The two players represent the No. 2 and No. 4 overall favorites to win OROY, the most valuable rookie award for a skill position player or quarterback.
This is after the possibility that punitive action may have been taken on the two for wagering on the NFL. No player or staff member is permitted to wager on anything NFL related — including awards, the combine or the draft.
Rookie minicamps started this week and included gambling-centered orientations that communicated the NFL's bylaws on the matter.
The NFL has suspended 10 players and a coach for violating the league's gambling protocols since legalized sports gambling proliferated in 2018. Of those, six players wagered on the NFL, with Eagles cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley betting on their own teams. Rodgers and Ridley were given the harshest punishments of the bunch, but neither player wagered on their team to lose, nor were they active participants in the wagers they placed.
The other four players and one coach were suspended for gambling on team facilities, which is barred by the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. While players and staff are permitted to wager on other sports or table games, they cannot do so on team grounds, including on road trips.
In the OROY market, Nabers and Daniels will have to catch Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, who is the far-and-away favorite at +170. Remember, Williams joined a team that had the No. 1 defense in EPA/play and DVOA to close out the season. The Bears weren't necessarily a bad team — they earned the No. 1 overall pick by virtue of trading back from 2023's No. 1 overall pick, in which the Panthers selected Bryce Young.
Daniels is No. 2 behind Williams at +600 at FanDuel. Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (+700) ranks above Nabers (+1400), who is tied with Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (+1400) for fourth on the odds board.
