Chris Baker's Giants vs. Jets Preview

The Giants offense struggled massively against the Texans, as they failed to muster more than 10 points despite playing Daniel Jones and the starters for nearly the entire first half. Jones was very volatile, as he had a three “big time throws” but also three “turnover worthy plays,” both of which led the league according to PFF.

Overall, he finished with an average 66.7 grade and threw for 138 yards on 11/17 pass attempts. It was mostly discouraging for Giants fans to watch Daniel Jones make some of the same bone-headed turnovers that we have become accustomed to over the past few years.

The brightest part of last week’s game was definitely Malik Nabers, who had multiple ridiculous catches and finished with four receptions for 64 yards. Daboll hasn’t committed to a final decision regarding starters in this game, but I would expect to see Tommy DeVito for the vast majority of the contest, with potentially some Drew Lock in relief.

Lock has been injured but has been activated for this game. DeVito has a sub-average 63.0 offensive grade in preseason play according to PFF. He’s completed just 52% of his passes and hasn’t really done much of note outside of avoiding turnovers. He’ll be going up against the Jets second and third stringers for the entire game, so the Giants should expect more out of him here.

The Giants have decent pass-catching depth with Isaiah Hodgins, Allen Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, and Isaiah Mckenzie. So, Devito should have open WRs down the field in this game.

The Jets have yet to play any of their key stars throughout preseason, and it is unlikely that will change here. We are going to see QB Adrian Martinez start for the Jets, and fourth-string rookie Andrew Peasley will probably see some snaps as well.

Martinez is very mobile and has high rushing upside. He will probably be able to produce some success against this weaker Giants defense. Martinez has had a great preseason, as he is ninthin PFF grade (76.0) amongst QBs that have had at least 20 dropbacks in preseason. I’d expect Martinez to be able to produce solid drives against a Giants defense that just got torched by the Texans last week.

Peasley will play much less than Martinez and he is a bit of an unknown coming out of University of Wyoming. Peasley has been average in his 27 dropbacks. He has completed 15 of 22 pass attempts with a 65.0 pass grade according to PFF. I wouldn’t expect to see Peasley play a ton, but if he sees the field, he has shown he can at least hit check-downs and avoid turning the ball over.

My Giants vs. Jets Prediction: Take the Over

I think this total is a bit low at over/under 31.5, given the expectation of Adrian Martinez and Tommy DeVito playing the vast majority of the game. Martinez has enough rushing upside to extend plays and produce points, and I think the Giants WR room can have success against the Jets backups.

DeVito and Martinez have enough experience to produce a few touchdown drives and get us over this tiny number.

Pick: Over 31.5 (-110)
