And then there was one.
The NFL preseason closes with a very intriguing matchup between the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Lions have become the NFL's darlings, while the Steelers have a true quarterback battle going on right now.
Mitch Trubisky was the presumed starter in Pittsburgh, but first-round pick Kenny Pickett is forcing the team's hand. The rookie out of the University of Pittsburgh has thrived this preseason and during training camp. With the Steelers looking to win this season, it may be tough to avoid starting the rookie.
Sam Farley and Simon Hunter are aligned on this matchup. Check out their picks and breakdowns for the game below.
Sam Farley: We’re finally there. The Lions face the Steelers in the final NFL preseason game before the regular season.
We’ll be taking the Steelers as favorites here. As well as being 2-0 this year, Mike Tomlin is 36-24 in his career in the preseason and always sends his teams out to win. Not only that, but we’ll see Mitch Trubisky start. He’s performed well in the preseason but so has Kenny Pickett.
Both men, and Mason Rudolph, will ensure they’re at their best so that they can try and win this QB competition. The job is likely to go to Trubisky for Week 1, but it’s not certain. A great performance here by Pickett could possibly steal him the job.
With three good quarterbacks going head-to-head for that starting spot, as well as Tomlin's preseason track record, I’m backing the Steelers to cover the spread here.
Simon Hunter: Last game of the preseason! How sad. Summer is over, friends, and what better way to do it than bet on guys named Mitch and Kenny.
I love a quarterback battle for a winner-take-all game like this. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said this game will help the team pick between Mitch Trubisky and rookie Kenny Pickett. That means starters will be playing plenty in this game. I love the pressure that will be on this team.
The Lions, on the other hand, have said Jared Goff and the Lions starters will only play a couple series.
I'd play the Steelers up to -6.
