Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will kick a field goal at Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Ariz. as part of an advertisement for FanDuel — but no, you can't bet on it.
Contrary to the company's advertising rounds, you can't directly bet on the kick — which Gronkowski has apparently been practicing for since November.
Instead, here's how you can win: If you place a wager of $5 or more on the Super Bowl, you'll be eligible to receive a proportional amount of up to $20 in free bets if Gronk sinks that mid-game kick.
So, for instance, let's say you bet $20 on the over. If Gronk sinks the 25-yard field goal, you'll receive $20 in free bets.
If you bet $25 on that same over, you'll only receive $20 in free bets, the max allotment available.
These are based on the Action Network's interpretation of the promotion's terms and conditions, which are slightly ambiguous.
The Action Network reached out to a FanDuel spokesperson who was unclear himself about the promo's specifics. This story will be updated as we know more.
The way FanDuel lays it out as is as follows: "Participants who place a pre-live wager of at least Five Dollars ($5) on Super Bowl LVII, will receive free bets available for use only on the FanDuel Sportsbook … equal to an amount ranging from Five Dollars ($5) to Twenty Dollars ($20), upon the completion of 'The Kick of Destiny'"
FanDuel said it is prepared to dole out at least $10 million in free bets as a part of this promotion.
The kick will be aired live as part of a live TV ad for the company.
Other types of Super Bowl wagers are eligible — say, for instance, you wager on the 49ers to win the Super Bowl at their current odds of +550.
If the 49ers make the Super Bowl, that wager will count toward this Gronkowski promotion.
The promo has galvanized FanDuel's competitors, too. In response to the Gronk announcement, Hard Rock Sportsbook's president Matt Primeaux said in a Tweet that he would grant Super Bowl bettors a bonus bet wheel spin up to $500 if Gronkowski misses the 25-yarder.
