The battle on Thursday Night Football between the Patriots and Steelers will feature two backup quarterbacks.

In fact, it's a trend that'll persist throughout the NFL this week, with seven or eight other teams sporting backup quarterbacks in one form or another.

The Steelers (Kenny Pickett), Patriots (Mac Jones), Jaguars (Trevor Lawrence), Browns (Deshaun Watson), Colts (Anthony Richardson), Bengals (Joe Burrow), Jets (Aaron Rodgers), Vikings (Kirk Cousins), Giants (Daniel Jones) and potentially the Saints (Derek Carr) will all be without their intended starting quarterback for games during Week 14.

For Thursday Night Football: Patriots vs. Steelers, it'll be the Mitch Trubisky vs. Bailey Zappe show.

Since the start of last season, backup QBs are 63-91 SU (41%) but a startling 83-67-4 ATS (55%).

Since 2013, the last 10 years, backup quarterbacks have been bad straight up, going 308-496-2 (38%). Their against the spread numbers are about average at a 49.5% win percentage (392-401-13). These stats are courtesy of my colleague and data guru Evan Abrams.

Since 2013, backup quarterbacks in their first start as of the season are 83-151-1 SU and 122-110-3 ATS. Backup QBs in their second start of the season are 27-49 straight up and 41-35 ATS over that same timeframe.

And since 2019, backup quarterbacks are 137-240-1 SU and 195-176-7 ATS. Backups QBs in their first start of the season are 37-85-1 SU and 67-54-2 ATS while QBs in their second start are 22-39 SU and 34-27 ATS.

If nine backup quarterbacks start this week, it would be the most in a non-Week 17 or Week 18 game since 2013, when nine backups also started in Week 14.
