Matchup Analysis

If this game is to be won at the line of scrimmage, the Commanders are at a distinct disadvantage.

The Eagles’ offensive line consists of a top-rated left tackle in Jordan Mailata as well as All-Pro center Jason Kelce. The rest of their line provides enough blocking power to keep Jalen Hurts safe from a less-than-stellar defensive challenge from Washington.

The Eagles’ front five will face a challenge in Chase Young, but Washington's young pass rusher will match up against Mailata. If the Commanders were to get any pressure on Hurts, it would be from the left side of Washington’s defensive line where Hurts will have the oncoming linebacker in his sights.

The Commanders’ offensive line has struggled this season, allowing the most sacks in the NFL with 40, and its best pass blockers aren’t even their linemen. Yes, three of their six players with top PFF pass-blocking grades are tight ends and halfbacks.

Left tackle Charles Leno Jr. is the Commanders' highest-graded lineman, but he has a tall task ahead of him facing Josh Sweat, who ranks in the top 10 in sacks (5.5).

Sweat also places in the top 10 in quarterback hurries with 19. As a top-of-the-line edge rusher, I expect to see him have a big game against a divisional opponent.

Leno will be tasked with keeping Sweat at bay, with the help of left guard Ricky Stromberg. Stormberg has a PFF pass-blocking grade of 41.7, which leaves a lot to be desired. If Leno needs help from Stromberg, I am not sure how much he can expect to receive.

Betting Picks & Predictions

Sweat forced two pressures on Commanders QB Sam Howell when the teams met four weeks ago, and he also tallied a sack. In the last three meetings between these two teams, Sweat has recorded at least one sack.

Sweat has proven that he can get to Washington quarterbacks, and I am not sure why anything changes on Sunday. His matchup is great, he will be attacking Howell’s blindside, and he has had proven success against Washington's offensive line.
