Pick Against the Spread
When Mike Tomlin's Steelers are underdogs, you bet them.
As an underdog in his career, he’s 59-31 (66%) against the spread, and he’s undefeated as a ‘dog this season. When you filter it a little more, Tomlin is 30-11 (73%) against the spread when facing a team with a record than his Steelers.
Over/Under Prediction
I'm passing on betting this game's over/under.
Moneyline
I'll just take the points with the Steelers and pass on betting their moneyline.
My pick: Steelers +2.5 (-115)
How To Bet Steelers vs. Commanders Picks
I haven’t faded Jayden Daniels much so far this season. The last time was against the Bears when Daniels’ status was up in the air and the Commanders ultimately won on a Hail Mary.
This is a good spot for the Steelers. The Pittsburgh defense is going to be the toughest unit that Washington will have faced this season. The Bears are probably the best defense that Daniels has faced this season, although he wasn’t healthy there.
Here, though, the Steelers are going to put more pressure on Daniels than he’s faced in his NFL career. Pittsburgh even added veteran Preston Smith at the trade deadline this week, which gives this defense a fourth proven pass-rusher.
People assume the Commanders will regress because of their defense, but the offense is due to slow down eventually, as well. Washington leads the NFL in scoring percentage per drive, which is unlikely to be sustainable at around 60%. The best over the past two decades was the 2007 Patriots with Tom Brady and Randy Moss, and that team was around 50%.
Also, the Commanders have done this while ranking 26th in the red zone. This emphasizes just how much this team relies on Daniels because when you look at the rest of the offense, the skill guys aren’t great. Noah Brown is the second receiver, the corpse of Zach Ertz is at tight end and Brian Robinson Jr. has been banged up all season in the backfield.
I think the Steelers defense will bring him back down to earth here. Pittsburgh is coming off its bye week, which means it will be more than ready for Daniels. The Commanders haven’t faced a defense like this, especially one that will be so prepared for their star rookie quarterback.
Offensively, the Steelers have played better offensively since Russell Wilson took over, even better than I expected. George Pickens has created a clear connection with Wilson, and the Steelers just traded for Mike Williams to add to their receiving corps.
Pick: Steelers +2.5 (-115)
