The New York Jets have made their decision at quarterback, and it's not Sam Darnold.
The Jets traded Darnold to the Carolina Panthers on Monday for a package of draft picks, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal included a 2022 second-rounder, clearing the way for the Jets to spend the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft on a quarterback.
Presumably, that will be Zach Wilson.
Wilson is the -1000 favorite to be the second overall pick at DraftKings. That's adjusted from the -305 odds listed one week ago. Those odds were as low as +120 at PointsBet on Feb. 16.
With Trevor Lawrence headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars first overall, the Jets were the pick to either take Wilson or trade out to a team looking for a quarterback despite public comments that they would stick with Darnold.
For the Panthers, it's a relatively steep price for a team without a ton of leverage. Carolina has Teddy Bridgewater under contract and the No. 8 overall pick in the draft, which could have been used to address the future of the position. That still could happen, but for now it appears Matt Rhule will try to bring out the potential in Darnold that never quite appeared for the Jets.
Darnold was the third overall pick in the 2018 draft, but never reached 20 touchdowns in his three seasons as a starter for New York.
