Steelers vs. Colts
Several backup quarterbacks have been forced to step in and play an extensive amount of snaps this season. However, none have filled in quite as seamlessly as Gardner Minshew has for Indianapolis.
The Colts are 5-4 in games started by Minshew, and they certainly haven’t been afraid to let him sling it considering he’s tallied 39-plus pass attempts in six of his nine starts while clearing the 300-yard mark in three of those contests.
Admittedly, Minshew’s overall numbers are a little bit all over the place. He’s recorded 240-plus passing yards in five of nine starts, but he’s also fallen short of 215 yards on three occasions. However, the Colts offense struggled miserably in a 34-14 loss to Cincinnati last week and Minshew still managed to go over his passing yards number with 240 on the afternoon, giving him 240-plus yards in three straight games.
When the name “Steelers” is mentioned, the first word that comes to mind may be “defense.” You can set aside your preconceptions for this prop as Minshew draws a matchup against a Pittsburgh defense that ranks 21st in passing yards allowed per game and 20th in yards allowed per pass attempt.
Minshew shouldn’t have too much trouble clearing this number.
Steelers vs. Colts
Mitch Trubisky made his first start of the season for Pittsburgh last week, and the result was disastrous. Trubisky completed 63% of his pass attempts for just 190 yards in a miserable 21-18 loss to New England.
Say whatever you want about his performance, but you can’t say that he didn’t play his heart out, highlighted by Trubisky rushing eight times for 30 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Trubisky is a total wild card in the passing department. However, when things break down in the passing game, he’s been known to take off and run quite frequently, highlighted by Trubisky averaging over 19 rushing yards on 5.9-plus carries per game in three of four campaigns as the starter for Chicago before beginning his backup circuit with Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
Only so many more opportunities lie ahead for Trubisky to prove that he’s a legitimate NFL quarterback, and while his passing skills may be lacking, I expect him to do everything within his power to propel Pittsburgh to a victory in the aftermath of last week’s frustrating loss.
Steelers vs. Colts
The Steelers backfield has been a hot topic of conversation this season as fans continue to debate which of Pittsburgh’s running backs should be the primary back. During the back half of the season, Jaylen Warren has been far more effective than his counterpart, Najee Harris.
Warren was surprisingly quiet last week as he finished with just 11 rushing yards on seven carries. Prior to that outing, Warren had tallied 49-plus rushing yards in five straight games while clearing the 85-yard mark in three of those contests.
The volume hasn’t always been there, highlighted by Warren averaging just 47.1 rushing yards on 8.4 carries per game on the season. But there should be plenty of ground yardage to go around in a matchup against a Colts defensive front that ranks 26th in rushing yards allowed per game.
