Sunday Night Football for Week 14 of the NFL season gives us an AFC clash between the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers.
I have three players to target in this game. These players aren’t the flashiest of names and are more bargain-bin guys who could surprise.
TE Mike Gesicki
Gesicki’s snaps dwindled last week because Durham Smythe needed to chip against the 49ers' stout defensive line, but he should be back closer to his normal role against a Chargers defense that ranks 28th in pressure rate (17.3%, per Pro Football Reference).
The Chargers play the least zone coverage in the league, and Gesicki is third on the Dolphins in targets against man coverage (9, per PFF). The Chargers also rank 23rd in DVOA against tight ends.
TE Gerald Everett
The Dolphins play the fourth-most man coverage, and Everett’s 2.43 yards per route run against man coverage ranks second behind Mike Williams (3.22) among active players on the team.
The Dolphins present a good matchup, ranking 29th in DVOA against tight ends.
TE Stone Smartt
Smartt saw his route participation rate jump from 11% two weeks ago to 23% last week as he saw a career-high three targets in his third NFL game.
He could take advantage of his limited opportunities against Miami’s man-heavy, bottom-four defense against tight ends as well. Of his four targets on the year, three have come against single coverage.
