Lovie Smith was booted out the Houston Texans organization after one year. Whichever head coach gets the job in 2023 immediately faces an uphill battle.
No other NFL franchise has been worse since 2020 than the Texans (11-38-1 overall, 22.5% win percentage).
There are familiar faces atop the odds board to be the next head coach, including Jonathan Gannon and Josh McCown.
However, other top candidates buzzing around the coaching carousel such as Sean Payton and Demeco Ryans could also be appointed.
And whichever candidate takes the post starts with one of the top picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Jonathan Gannon Odds for Texans Head Coach: +200
Gannon's been the Eagles' defensive coordinator since 2021. He was a hot commodity last year for the Texans job, before Smith was ultimately assigned.
The 40-year-old DC already conducted an interview with Houston earlier this week.
Gannon's unit has been stout in 2022, leading the NFL and setting the franchise record with 70 sacks.
Shane Steichen Odds for Texans Head Coach: +350
From one Philly coordinator to the other, Steichen, the maestro behind the Eagles' high-soaring offense, is another top favorite.
Steichen led Philly to top-five ranks league-wide during the regular season in both yards per play (5.9) and points per game (28.1).
It's a matter of when, not if Steichen lands a head coaching job; he's among the top-seven favorites for all five next-head-coach markets DraftKings is offering (Texans, Colts, Panthers, Cardinals, Broncos).
Demeco Ryans Odds for Texans Head Coach: +650
Ryans is arguably the most popular name in the carousel, perhaps sans Sean Payton.
The current 49ers DC has lit it up in the Bay Area, leading the top-scoring defense in football.
He's also the third choice in the odds field for the Colts job.
