Chelsea welcomes Leicester City to Stamford Bridge for Saturday's crucial Premier League showdown featuring outfits not off to the best of starts.
The Blues, who are obviously heavily favored on home soil, are coming off a shocking 3-0 shutout road defeat against Leeds United last time out. On the other side, the Foxes were no better in a 2-1 home setback against Southampton in their latest fixture.
Needless to say, both clubs are looking to bag all three points in a meeting Chelsea has dominated head to head of late across all competitions.
Chelsea
If you told me Chelsea would be sitting in the bottom half of the table after three league contests, I probably would have told you you're a tad crazy. Well, here we are with Christian Pulisic and company parked in 12th place.
An opening 1-0 win at Everton was workmanlike and fine. The Blues followed that with the wild 2-2 home draw against Tottenham, which should have been a win for the hosts after some very sketchy officiating (in my opinion) played a significant role in the outcome.
Then throw in the lackluster performance against Leeds and you have a steady, consistent European giant looking for answers right out of the gate.
On a positive note, Chelsea has found a ton of success against Leicester in recent fixtures. That includes three victories, with two finishing in shutouts for manager Thomas Tuchel's defense.
By The Numbers
- 3.7 — Number of combined expected goals for Chelsea this season.
- 3.5 — Number of combined xGA for the Blues this campaign, which is uncharacteristically bad for the typically staunch defense.
Leicester City
To say the Foxes have looked mediocre at best through three fixtures would be an understatement. Offensively, they've finished their matches with xG totals of 0.6, 0.6 and 0.3 to prove they're lacking going forward.
On the defensive side, Leicester hasn't been that bad other than the 2.6 xGA it conceded in a 4-2 loss at the hands of current EPL leader Arsenal. However, home defeats at the hands of Brentford and Southampton — not exactly league giants — have to have manager Brendan Rodgers and the club worried.
Making matters worse is the fact the Foxes were forced to go to penalties earlier this week against fourth-division minnow Stockport County in EFL Cup action before advancing to the next round. Yikes…
By The Numbers
- -2.3 — Total xGDiff for Leicester City through three EPL contests.
- -0.76 — Total xGDiff per 90 minutes for the Foxes so far this season, which is the third worst in the entire 20-team league.
Betting Analysis & Pick
Chelsea was utterly embarrassed against Leeds, so I fully expect a resounding rebound effort against a Leceister City outfit that has looked downright poor so far this season.
However, playing the Blues at -240 or even longer on the moneyline is just not acceptable. So, I'm backing a Same Game Parlay pairing the host to win outright with the total staying under 3.5 goals at +110 odds as my top pick.
In their last six meetings, the Blues and Foxes failed to reach four combined goals. So, when you combine that historical data with the fact Tuchel's men are surely going to put an onus on locking things down defensively after the Elland Road debacle, we should be going in the right direction.
The Pick: Same Game Parlay — Chelsea ML & Total Under 3.5 Goals (+115)
