After a wildly successful Euros run, England are looking to capitalize on recent success and win their first-ever World Cup title.
Haiti, meanwhile, are playing in their first World Cup, and they are playing England for the first time.
Read on for my preview and pick for England vs Haiti in the Women’s World Cup.
England Bring Positive Momentum Into Opener
In the span of two years, manager Sarina Wiegman has put together an England squad that is a contender. Since taking over as manager in September 2021, Wiegman has led the team to its first Euros title and to victory over Brazil in the first-ever women’s Finalissima. Her first loss as England’s coach came just this year, a 2-0 loss to Australia.
A number of big pieces are missing with Beth Mead, Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby all out with varying injuries. But England are still one to contend, with Rachel Daly, Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly leading the team’s front line. Goalkeeper Mary Earps is one of the best in the world, and she is protected by Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright and Lotte Wubben-Moy. In all, this is a team with a lot of talent that has had some big wins in recent months, including a 2-0 win over the USWNT at Wembley last October.
This team is battle tested after last summer’s Euros, which included wins over Germany, Sweden and Spain – all favorites for deep runs in this World Cup. But the loss to Australia and a July 0-0 draw with Portugal loom large.
England are one of just two teams to reach the semifinals of the last two World Cups (the other would be the USA), and they’ll be looking to make a deep run once again. Their depth will be their strength and could very well overwhelm Haiti in their first-ever World Cup game.
Not Everything Looks Bad For Haiti
Haiti are one of many teams in this tournament making their World Cup debut. They beat Senegal and Chile to secure qualification in the Inter-Confederation playoffs and are currently ranked 53rd in the world.
This will be the team’s first game against England, and it has a lot to contend with. Not to mention, this is a young team, as just one player has over 20 international appearances and the squad has an average age of 21.5 years old.
But hope isn’t all lost – Batcheba Louis has 23 goals through 16 international appearances while captain Nérilia Mondésir has 18 goals through 16 appearances. Roselord Borgella, the team's most experienced player, has 20 goals through 25 appearances.
With such young talent could come some surprises, particularly from a team that is looking to do so. After all, they faced a longer road than most to World Cup qualification, which has meant this team has played together a lot this year.
England vs Haiti Pick
Despite loads of talent, England have had a hard time scoring so far this year. England have some high-powered scorers, but they’ve struggled to replace Beth Mead – who won the Golden Boot at last year’s Euros.
Still, it’s hard to contend against England's attack, especially given the fact that Wiegman is leading this team. She’s won back-to-back Euros titles, and four years ago led the Netherlands all the way to the World Cup final. At that same World Cup, England reached the semifinal before being knocked out by the USWNT.
But they’ll need to score first: they’ve never lost when scoring the first goal in a Women’s World Cup game, with a record of 13-0-2. And despite England’s shaky form, Haiti have arguably been worse, losing all four of the games it’s played in the last month. But Haiti went scoreless in just one of those games, so a clean sheet for Mary Earps may not be in the cards.
Look for England to win this one, 4-1.
The Pick: England 4 – Haiti 1 (Both teams to score, +240)
