Things could get pretty interesting Thursday when Tottenham Hotspur hosts LASK Linz in their Europa League opener.

This showdown between the Spurs — the 2019 Champions League runner-up — and the Austrian side opens Group J action in the competition. Both clubs look to get off on the right foot on the long journey ahead.

Having said that, let's take a look at this contest and what's in store.

Spurs

Tottenham enters this confrontation fresh off a brutal 3-3 draw against West Ham United in its latest Premier League fixture.

Why was that tie so bad? Simple. The Spurs squandered a 3-0 lead with eight minutes to go in the game, which led to them walking away with just one point and a blown opportunity.

Manager Jose Mourinho will surely want to right the Spurs' ship quickly and get things back in order in this contest. It will be interesting to see who the skipper sends out in his Starting XI, but expect Gareth Bale to get a big look to lead the charge at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham sits on 10.8 expected goals and 7.0 expected goals against, resulting in a +3.8 xGDiff and +0.76 xGDiff/90 minutes in England's top flight. Those numbers are some of the best among all clubs in the league.

LASK

The Austrian Bundesliga club hasn't gotten off to the greatest of starts, going 2-1-1 through its first four league matches of its campaign. It enters this game on the heels of a 3-0 defeat against Rapid Wien.

LASK is not a club to be taken lightly, having eliminated DAC Dunajska Streda and Sporting Lisbon in the Europa qualifying rounds of the competition and winning four of its last five games across all competitions.

Expect LASK to send out its first-team lineup against Tottenham with the hope of securing at least a point to open up group play.

As for the data and statistics, there isn't much to go on other than it has scored five goals and conceded five thus far in league play.

Expected goals (also known as xG) is an advanced statistic that gives an indication of whether results are based on sustainable factors like a steady creation of scoring chances, or whether it is down to aspects such as luck or outstanding goalkeeping.

Spurs-LASK Picks

We have leaky defenses and volatile offenses when it comes to these clubs.

That said, I am backing the total to go over the number. Tottenham could hit this number on its own in my opinion, so I anticipate we won't be short on goals at the north of London stadium.

Toss in the fact there have been at least three goals in seven of Spurs' last eight Europa League matches, and I like my chances with this pick. There have been at least three goals in LASK's last four games in this competition, giving me even more confidence with this angle.

I will also back both teams to score. Tottenham's porous backline was on full display in that dismal draw against West Ham, so the odds are in favor of LASK to get into the scoring column.

Picks: Total Over 3 Goals (-136); Both Teams To Score — Yes (-130)

BONUS PLAYS

  • Napoli -1.75 (-152) vs. AZ Alkmaar: Napoli enters this match fresh off a 4-1 rout of Serie A foe and Champions League side Atalanta, which should have it feeling more than optimistic ahead of its meeting with the Dutch side. Add in the fact AZ Alkmaar will be missing at least eight players due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the club, and you have the makings of a rout on Italian soil.
  • AC Milan (-130) vs. Celtic: These sides could not be going in more opposite directions. Both played derbies, with AC Milan earning a 2-1 win against Inter over the weekend. Things were not so glorious for Celtic, which suffered a 2-0 loss against Rangers. The Serie A visitors have won the last three meetings between these sides. Expect AC Milan to make it four in a row.
