West Ham United welcomes Eintracht Frankfurt to the London Stadium on Thursday for the first leg of their Europa League semifinal tie.
The Hammers will be confident of progressing to the final after eliminating two of the better teams in the competition in Sevilla and Lyon in the previous knockout rounds.
However, the German side is fresh off the surprising upset over a Barcelona team that was the tournament favorite before getting dumped out in the quarterfinals.
This is a matchup of clubs that haven’t won a European competition in a long time, which I think should give us an exciting two games.
Moyes, West Ham Chasing UCL Berth
Veteran manager David Moyes has put all of his chips into winning the Europa League as the team’s best option to make the Champions League next season.
Moyes has to like his chances of securing the title. However, West Ham has been lucky in the knockout stages so far.
In the four games against Sevilla and Lyon, the London club only owned a +0.2 xGDiff and allowed just two actual goals on 5.6 xG, according to fbref.com.
It also won't help that the Hammers might only have one true center-back healthy for this match, as Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna have all been out injured in recent games.
Frankfurt Making Noise in Deep Run
The big question surrounding Frankfurt is whether it can back up the incredible performance against Barcelona in the quarterfinal round with another great showing.
If you look at the advanced metrics over the last two rounds, the German side has deserved its place in the semifinals, owning a +1.5 xGDiff in matches against Real Betis and the Spanish giant.
Those victories came after Frankfurt topped Group D with a +2.2 xGDiff in a group that included Olympiacos, Fenerbahçe and Royal Antwerp.
The Hammers might be betting favorites to advance to the final, but the German contenders are full of confidence and will be difficult to beat.
Betting Analysis & Pick
When we look at the odds at Caesars, West Ham is listed as the -105 moneyline favorite in the opening leg to go along with a total of 2.5 goals.
I’m not looking to back either team, but I do see goals in the game. So, my best bet is to play the Both Teams to Score (Yes) wager at -120 odds.
If you start with the visitors, Frankfurt has played 10 fixtures in the competition so far. Of those games, this same bet would have cashed in all but one contest.
This is the same team that averaged 1.73 xG per 90 minutes in the last two knockout rounds, while the four games also averaged a combined 3.08 xG per match.
As for West Ham, both teams have scored in a league-high 76 percent of home matches in the EPL this season, which also cashed in the first leg of the last knockout round.
The big issue has been the recent defensive struggles for the Hammers. Over their last seven games overall, the London club has allowed an average of 1.84 xG per match.
Moyes now has to lead his squad out with just one true central defender against a team that has been putting up great offensive numbers. That said, this doesn’t sound like a recipe for shutouts and a low-scoring affair.
I also think the total flies over 2.5 goals at -105, but I like the bonus coverage of getting a 1-1 game covered with the Both Teams To Score bet.
This should be an exciting match and I believe we’ll have goals to add to the entertainment of the showdown.
Pick: Both Teams To Score — Yes (-120)
