I am backing Lille to Win and Over 2.5 goals in the Lille vs. Borussia Dortmund match.
Lille Prediction
It was a close call for Les Doges in the first leg as a 22nd-minute conceded goal looked like the first of many to come. However, they fought back, leveled the score in the second half, and are now sitting in a prime position to reach their first Champions League quarterfinal.
The team, coached by Bruno Genesio, has been a dark horse for some time in European competitions and has won 10 of their past 12 at home. In this UCL league phase, they're unbeaten in four at home and got key wins, such as a 6-1 thrashing of Feyenoord and a historic 1-0 triumph over Real Madrid, to secure a spot in the top eight.
Lille — historically one of the few teams that can match PSG in the French Ligue 1 — is fighting for the "best of the rest" spot this season. Fifth in points with 44, they have won four of their past six and are just five points away from second-place Marseille.
Edon Zhegrova (muscle), Tiago Santos (knee) and Samuel Umtiti (muscle) are all out injured. Osame Sahraoui (inflammation), Mitchel Bakker (ankle) and Gabriel Gudmundsson (illness) are in doubt.
Borussia Dortmund Prediction
Borussia Dortmund must be disappointed not to have come away with a half-cooked series. They dominated the first half, but a poor performance in the second cost them. However, the German side is hardly a newcomer to late collapses. They were denied the 2022-'23 Bundesliga after a 2-2 home draw to Mainz, losing out on goal difference to rivals Bayern Munich.
Things aren't working much better in the Bundesliga this season as Dortmund sits in 10th.
Borussia Dortmund has been hit-and-miss in Europe. They've lost just three of their past eight Europe away knockout games, but failed to qualify the last time they did not win the first leg at home. Their performances in France have also been lackluster and they have just two wins and six defeats in their past 10 games.
Felix Nmecha (knee) and Daniel Svensson (knee) are the only ones out, while Carney Chukwuemeka, who carries a muscle problem, is in doubt.
Lille vs. Borussia Dortmund Pick
This is a matchup of top-heavy teams. Both teams' defining characteristics have been their attacking prowess and defensive difficulties. But while Dortmund failed to take advantage of their moment in the sunshine, I don't expect Lille to do the same.
Canada's Jonathan David will lead the line for Lille and I expect him to succeed where the likes of Karim Adeyemi and Jamie Gittens failed. Still, it'd be unrealistic to expect a defensive masterclass from the French side, so with the total at 2.5, I'll take the over.
