Liverpool Prediction
Arne Slot's men are back in England after coming awful close to losing the top spot in the UEFA Champions League table. The Reds have had their last-16 spot booked for a while, allowing Slot to rotate his starting lineup, but their shock 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven must have given the coach some food for thought.
Still, Liverpool remains very much the team to beat. This is the most prolific side in the league, with 54 goals in 22 games played. They saw star Mohamed Salah move to seventh in the Premier League's all-time goalscoring charts, thanks to his 35th-minute strike during Liverpool's 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at Anfield, which was enough to surpass Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
Not even injuries seem to be getting to them. Defender Joe Gomez returned to full training and could get his first minutes in 2025. Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are also returning, and the rest of the squad is available.
In truth, barring a blow like a big injury to key players like Salah, Virgil Van Dijk or Alexis Mac Allister, it looks increasingly like Liverpool's title to lose this season.
Bournemouth Prediction
Andoni Iraola is performing nothing short of a miracle at Bournemouth. The Cherries are fresh off a 5-0 thumping of the season's other surprise side, Nottingham Forest, and looking to swap last season's mid-table mediocrity with a European berth.
Iraola's side favors a controlled and ordered approach during build-up, enabling forwards Dango Ouattara, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo to bring creativity and unpredictability in the final third. As a result, they are unbeaten in 12 games across all competitions, including their last 11 in the Premier League.
Bournemouth is seventh in the table, with 40 points, and a win could propel them to fourth, depending on other results.
However, injuries will limit their progress. Evanilson (foot) and Unal (knee) are out with long-term injuries, while Marcos Senesi (thigh), James Hill (thigh) and Julian Araujo (thigh) are limited to a game-to-game basis and need to nurse physical issues.
Liverpool vs. Bournemouth Pick
Liverpool's road to a record-tying 20th Premier League title looks open enough, but some obstacles remain, and Bournemouth is certainly one.
History suggests this will also be a high-scoring game. Liverpool has scored in all but one of their last 15 Premier League matchups with Bournemouth. The Cherries can put up numbers too, with 16 goals in their last four games.
Still, some factors point toward the Reds ending Iraola's run. Slot’s side has struggled in games where teams have set up to defend against them, but Bournemouth's open, attacking plan could play right into their hands.
Injuries will also cost the hosts, who could lack off-the-bench quality options, something Slot's team has plenty of, having had many key players sit out during the mid-week game.
In some other life, in some other context, this could be the infamous Liverpool's Gerrard Slip, but I just don't see it happening.
