In the marquee Premier League match of the weekend, Manchester City travels to Anfield on Saturday to play Liverpool.
The Cityzens are the only undefeated team remaining in the EPL, but they still find themselves second in the table behind Arsenal.
Meanwhile, the Reds have had to battle a handful of injuries, causing a slow start and possibly eliminating them from the title race already.
This has been one of the most anticipated games in the English top flight over the last few years, and I think we should have another entertaining encounter.
Liverpool Going Through Rough Period
How bad has this start been for Liverpool? With only 10 points in the opening eight league matches, this is the Reds' worst record at this stage of a campaign since the 2012-13 season.
Manager Jürgen Klopp’s team has also already lost as many games this season (2) as it did in the whole of 2021-22.
One reason for this has been the constant rotation in the lineup due to injuries, which will continue in this match. Defenders Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold, midfielder Naby Keïta and key winger Luis Diaz are all likely missing this game, though left-back Andrew Robertson is set to return.
Klopp needs to get a performance at home out of his side because a loss on Saturday would put the Reds 16 points behind City.
Manchester City Still Best in the League
Although the Cityzens may not sit at the top of the table, they have the best metrics in the league across multiple categories.
Through nine games, manager Pep Guardiola’s team is first in xGDiff (+15.9), goals scored (33) and xG allowed (5.1), according to fbref.com.
It also helps that summer signing Erling Haaland has hit the ground running at his new club, scoring 20 goals in all competitions so far.
City was held to a surprising draw at Copenhagen on Tuesday in the Champions League, but you have to wonder if the team was looking ahead to this fixture.
Betting Analysis & Pick
The bookmakers are expecting City’s strong start to continue, posting the visitors as the favorite at -120 odds on the moneyline to go with a total set at 3.5 goals. I’m not seeing too much value in either of those traditional spots, but I do like a bet in the prop market.
My best bet is to back Kevin De Bruyne to get an assist at +150 odds.
Judging by the total being set at 3.5 instead of 2.5, oddsmakers are telling you that they expect to see goals in this game, which lines up with how this fixture has played out recently. Over the last three years, there have been at least four goals scored in six of the last seven games between the teams.
No playmaker has been better than De Bruyne this season. He leads the EPL in assists (nine), shot-creating actions (46) and goal-creating actions (16).
Meanwhile, the Belgian is also normally involved in taking the corners and free kicks for City, which gives us more opportunities for him to set up the hottest striker in the world.
This is also not the same stout defensive unit that Liverpool have had in the past. The Reds have only secured two clean sheets in the EPL, which came against Everton and Bournemouth.
The Pick: Kevin De Bruyne – Anytime Assist (+150)
