It's the biggest game in English soccer: Liverpool takes on Manchester United at Anfield. A storied rivalry that has seen championships defined and cups won and lost writes a new chapter on Sunday, Jan 5.

Here is my Liverpool vs. Manchester United prediction and Premier League odds for tonight's match.

Liverpool Prediction

At this point, it will be a proper debacle if Liverpool loses this Premier League title. The league leaders are six points clear of Arsenal after their 5-0 battering of West Ham (where yours truly recommended to bet on the Over 3.5).

Forward Mohamed Salah keeps putting out Ballon d'Or-earning performances to power a seemingly unstoppable Liverpool side. Nottingham Forest's surprise 1-0 win at Anfield is the only time Arne Slot's side lost a game in 90 minutes in 2024, and that was in September.

Their recent form against United is also worth a look. Liverpool have only lost once in their last 13 Premier League encounters against the Red Devils. That's compounded with the Reds' form when beginning a calendar year at Anfield, where they are unbeaten in their last eight.

Slot lost center-back Joe Gomez against West Ham, out with a hamstring injury, but will see Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley become an option as they return to full training. Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is also back after serving a suspension.

Manchester United Prediction

Are Manchester United fans missing former head coach Erik ten Hag already? They should, in any case, cause replacement Ruben Amorim has only exacerbated the crisis.

Only Southampton have lost more matches in all competitions (7) than United (6) since Amorim’s first match in charge. They were hopelessly outplayed at home against Newcastle United. As the Red Devils begin 2025 sitting a record-low 14th in the Premier League, the words "relegation candidate" no longer sound impossible.

Eight teams starting the year at 14th or higher have been relegated since 1992. United's 0.88 points per game under Ruben Amorim has set them on pace for 39 points in 38 games, a figure six teams found insufficient to avoid the drop since 1995/96.

The good news for United is the return of midfielders Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes. Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw are all unavailable.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United Prediction

History reverberates, so it looks like sportsbooks are expecting the Red Devils to summon some of the fire that made this the greatest rivalry in English football to at least make it a contest. But I can't see it happening.

If this were any other matchup, there would be no question about the outcome. Liverpool holds a monumental 23-point advantage over a historically bad Manchester United. Even if this wasn't the case, the Red Devils haven't scored at Anfield in a Premier League game since 2018.

Pretend it's any other rival and bet on the Over. Liverpool are on for a historic win.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United Pick: Over 3.5
