It's an intriguing matchup on Wednesday as league leaders Liverpool take on their soon-to-be League Cup final rivals Newcastle United. Is this a chance for the Reds to stomp their authority ahead of the decider or a precursor to a hammering in the final? Let's find out.

Liverpool Prediction

Liverpool enters the matchup as heavy favorites after last week's results strengthened their grip on the title race. Their landmark 2-0 victory over Manchester City, combined with Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to West Ham, saw them surge 11 points clear of the Gunners at the top of the table, albeit with one more game. The Reds now hold an impressive 96.7% chance of clinching the Premier League title, per Opta.

Liverpool's prowess at Anfield is especially notable. They have avoided defeat in each of their last 17 home matches while scoring at least two goals in all of them. Few sides have better first-hand experience of this than Newcastle, who haven't tasted victory at the historic ground since 1994. Liverpool remain unbeaten in their last 28 home encounters against the Magpies in the Premier League, boasting 23 wins and five draws.

The expected return of Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, despite a facial bruise, and the promising return of Dutch striker Cody Gakpo mean that aside from the injuries to Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Tyler Morton, Arne Slot's squad is mainly fit and ready to go.

Newcastle Prediction

Newcastle United's fortunes have been more mixed. The Magpies are fresh off a narrow 4-3 victory over Nottingham Forest, which could've been their third consecutive league defeat.

Despite the win, their recent 4-0 defeat against Manchester City showcased their vulnerability at the back. The Magpies have conceded nine goals in their last three games and failed to secure a clean sheet in five consecutive top-flight matches.

Still, Eddie Howe's side are relatively unscathed squad-wise. There is optimism regarding the potential return of Brazilian midfielder Joelinton and Dutch defender Sven Botman from knee injuries. Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali has fully recovered from a hamstring issue. However, they will still be missing captain and defender Jamaal Lascelles, who is expected to return from a torn ACL in late March.

Newcastle's poor record at Anfield — a thrilling 3-3 draw in their last visit thanks to Fabian Schar's late heroics probably being their best memory of the venue — compounds with the Magpies' historical struggle against Premier League leaders. They have never won away to an EPL leader, with five draws and 15 losses.

Liverpool vs. Newcastle Pick

In a matchup that traditionally brings goals — the average sits comfortably over three goals per game — it'd be wise to expect plenty. While Liverpool's firepower hasn't been what was at the beginning of the season, they're likely to get a hand from the Magpies' defense.

Eddie Howe's men have shown they can score plenty, but after backing them to do it against a striken Manchester City, I don't trust this is the game where the Magpies break their Anfield curse.

If you're in for a parlay, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah became the first player to register 25+ goals and 15+ assists in a Premier League season. He's just one home goal away from scoring 10+ home goals and 10+ away goals in three different EPL campaigns, having scored twice and assisted once in the previous matchup, so he's likely to wreak havoc on Newcastle's defense again.
