Liverpool Prediction
Liverpool fans got their Christmas gift a day late. Chelsea’s last-minute defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day took the Reds to a potential 9-point lead at the top of the Premier League, as they hold a game in hand to second-placed Arsenal.
Arne Slot's team is now on a 13-game Premier League unbeaten streak after coming from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1. They have come from behind to earn 12 points this season, the most of any team bar Manchester City.
Not everything smells of roses at Anfield, however. The Reds have conceded 10 goals in their last four Premier League away matches, including three at the hands of a Southampton team on pace to become one of the league's worst-ever sides.
Mohamed Salah's record-breaking campaign — he became the first player to reach double figures in goals and assists before Christmas — has kept any defensive woes at bay.
Ibrahima Konate (knee) and Conor Bradley (hamstring) are the only men out of consideration, with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz on the bench against Leicester.
West Ham Prediction
The Hammers have come leaps and bounds since the start of Julen Lopetegui’s tenure, enough to climb to the "dizzying" heights of 13th place. Unbeaten in their last four Premier League games matches, they look to win a fifth consecutive league game for the first time since March.
Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski remains doubtful after being stretchered off with a nasty-looking head injury during West Ham’s win at Southampton. Tomas Soucek and Guido Rodriguez are both suspended, and Max Kilman suffered a shoulder injury, but that's the end of bad news for West Ham, with Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá making a return.
While results have picked up for the Hammers, their form hasn't. Their 1-0 win against Southampton left more doubts than certainties. They gifted three clear chances, but the Saints were kind enough to waste them in the first half. That should serve as a cautionary tale.
Liverpool vs. West Ham Prediction
This game simply comes too soon in the West Ham recovery arc for them to carry any significant momentum, and history teaches us we're in for a spanking. The London side won just one of its last 16 Premier League games against Liverpool.
Their defensive issues can be overlooked when going up against a relegation candidate, but now they're facing a player on a literal record-breaking campaign.
West Ham might get one, maybe even two, but this is not the game where Liverpool's blistering form flickers. Salah will take advantage of the Hammer's defense.
