Two star-studded rosters for head-to-head as we make a Man City vs Bayern Munich pick in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. European football masterminds Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel are going to need their teams playing at their very best if they’re going to outplay their opponent.
City have been running through their recent opposition, scoring 21 goals in their past 4 matches while only conceding two. Bayern have dealt with recent challenges while suffering defeats against German competition SC Freiburg and Leverkusen.
Both managers have a lot to prove heading into this CL match. Guardiola will be desperate to advance with Man City in the latter stages of the CL after years of letdown from the English side on the international stage. This year, with the addition of goal scoring machine Erling Haaland, excuses will be limited for the Cityzens if they fail to advance.
Tuchel, on the other hand, needs to find success in only his fourth match managing Bayern. He was sacked by Chelsea in September the morning after getting upset in the CL by Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. Tuchel needs this win to make a statement with the Bavarians.
Bayern Munich Likely to Use Conservative Mindset
As Bayern travel to England without key goalscorer Eric Maxim Chupo-Moting, I expect them to play more defense-minded to try and contain Man City to a draw. If that fails, they may look to keep the aggregate under control to give themselves a chance heading into the second leg in Munich.
Bayern did well in their last round against PSG at keeping the star-studded Parisian attack to zero goals in two games, but nobody in Europe is as hot as Haaland right now. Given Bayern’s recent struggles and the new appointment of Tuchel as manager, we’ll see how well they can contain the Cityzens.
Man City Firing on Offensive End
Haaland has helped turn the Cityzens into one of the most feared attacking sides in all of Europe. He’s responsible for 44 goals in 38 matches across all competitions this season, including a combined eight goals in City's two recent victories over Leipzig and Burnley.
With Haaland’s recent dominance over his opposition, and Man City’s overall impressive attacking play in recent games, there’s no doubt that they’ll be able to bury at least one in the back of the net against Bayern during the 90 minutes of play. The Cityzens haven’t been held scoreless in their home stadium since March of 2022, months before Haaland even signed with Man City.
Given Man City’s momentum going into this game and their home field advantage, I expect them to produce a few goals.
Man City vs Bayern Munich Pick
The bottom line is that Man City are on a roll right now heading into this match, and it’s hard to be confident in Bayern given their recent shaky performances and their new manager.
For these reasons, in addition to Chupo-Moting’s injury and Pep’s desperation to show the world that he can lead Man City to a Champions League title, I'm confident that City will come away with a win.
While this game could turn into Man City blowing out Bayern if the game opens up, I think it will be a closer game as Bayern will play cautiously to limit City’s attacking threat.
