Capping off the midweek slate in Major League Soccer, Atlanta United travels to the tri-state area Thursday to face the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena.
The home side enters the match holding a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the Red Bulls have only picked up two wins in their last eight games.
Meanwhile, Atlanta has struggled with numerous injuries to key players, sits in 10th place and will be looking for a much-needed victory.
This is a game between two high-scoring clubs, so I think this has the chance to be one of the more entertaining matches of the midweek schedule.
New York Red Bulls
While this has been a solid season, manager Gerhard Struber and his team have really struggled to pick up points at home.
The Red Bulls have only secured two wins in eight matches at Red Bull Arena. However, those victories did come in their last two home fixtures against D.C. United and Toronto FC.
One key player for New York has been Lewis Morgan, who leads the squad with seven goals and an assist.
By The Numbers
- 63 — Both teams have found the back of the net in this percentage of Red Bulls’ home games, which includes five of the last seven outings.
- 1.59 — Only New York City FC (1.96), Los Angeles FC (1.78) and the Philadelphia Union (1.61) have better xG per 90 minutes averages than RBNY, according to fbref.com.
Atlanta United
Injuries have really derailed Atlanta’s season so far, with club captains Brad Guzan and Miles Robinson suffering season-ending injuries early in the campaign.
Meanwhile, key striker Josef Martínez has missed a large chunk of action, but he has returned in the last two fixtures.
Another key issue for United has been the team’s form away from home, where the club has only four points in seven road matches.
By The Numbers
- 4 — Both teams have scored in the last four road games involving Atlanta.
- 3 — United has only earned a clean sheet in this many fixtures this season out of a total of 15 league matches.
Betting Analysis & Pick
I have a hard time seeing these defenses keeping the offenses off the board in this game, which is why I’m backing Both Teams to Score at -135 odds via BetMGM as my top pick.
We touched on Atlanta’s defensive struggles, but RBNY also only has four shutouts on the season and just one in their last nine MLS contests.
Meanwhile, this same bet has cashed in seven of the last eight fixtures involving Atlanta United, so I don’t see that changing in a match between clubs in the top eight in MLS for xG per match.
The Pick: Both Teams To Score — Yes (-135)
