Newcastle United host Fulham at St. James Park on Sunday in one of the two early kickoffs in the Premier League.
The Magpies have been impressive this season, coming into the weekend unbeaten at home and in third in the league table.
Meanwhile, the Cottagers have been the biggest surprise of the campaign, entering the matchweek in sixth on 31 points.
The visitors will be full of confidence after the midweek derby win, but I feel the home side will be too much for them in this game.
Newcastle Fighting For High Honors
Most expected improvement this season after the additions made to the squad and time for manager Eddie Howe to settle with his team, but I don’t think anyone expected the club to be pushing for Champions League qualification.
Howe’s squad has been strong in defense, ranking inside the top three in both xG allowed per 90 minutes (0.91) and big scoring chances surrendered per match (1.16), according to fbref.com.
Offensively, the Magpies have one of the most in-form players in the EPL in attacker Miguel Almirón. The Paraguayan winger has nine goals on the season, which is the most he has scored in a league season since netting 12 for Atlanta United in 2018.
With Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak as additional attacking options, Howe has one of the strongest sides outside of Manchester City and Arsenal.
Fulham Beating All Expectations
In Fulham’s last season in the English top flight, the club finished with 28 points, which Marco Silva’s side has already surpassed with the victory over Chelsea on Thursday night.
The derby triumph was the first time the Cottagers have beaten the Blues since the 2006 EPL campaign, spanning back 22 matches.
What was even more impressive was the fact that Fulham did so without star forward Aleksandar Mitrović, who was suspended for yellow-card accumulation.
The Serbian striker will return to the squad for this match against his former club. So, you have to figure he will be fired up to add to his 11 league goals this season.
Newcastle vs. Fulham Pick
When I look at the odds for this match, Newcastle are listed as the heavy -190 favorite on the moneyline to go with a total of 2.5 goals. I do want to back the hosts, but I see better value in another market.
My best bet is a Single Game Parlay, pairing a Magpies’ victory with the total flying over 1.5 goals at -130.
On the season, 84% of Fulham’s games have finished with multiple goals, which only trails Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur. This includes 78% of away matches for the Cottagers.
The Whites also allow 1.78 expected goals and 3.1 big scoring chances per match on the road, which is not good when making the longest trip in the EPL on short rest after the big derby win Thursday.
Meanwhile, Newcastle boasts a +11.2 xGDiff and a 3.33 big scoring chances per game average at home this campaign. I also think the Magpies are a great parlay piece if you have someone to pair them with.
Pick: Single Game Parlay – Newcastle ML & Over 1.5 (-130)
